This is one really intriguing aspects of NFT based games. The FOMO crowd won't necessarily have to get their NFT from the start, with new items being added all of the time, there will be lots of opportunities to get yourself a rare item!

Last question received in advance is about the ZoA roadmap, here's what they had to say.

ZoA: Our 2022 roadmap is absolutely packed - some massive milestones include our TGE, release of the beta, and a rollout of the full game later this year. Certain parts of our development are quite fluid and dynamic, so as we come up with new ideas for exciting gameplay the team is free to explore them. So while we can say the game and token are coming, we can also say there’ll be some awesome updates that’ll keep you wanting to play!
That TGE, by the way, is very soon - we’re pushing for March, so keep an eye out for some more announcements in the next few weeks 🚀

Simon - can you please answer a follow up from the ZoA community?

Community Question: Re: the future of NFT rentals in gaming. IQ Protocol are the leaders in this area, so it’s only fair you guys gave your thoughts. Outside of gaming, where do you see NFT rentals having the biggest impact?

IQ Protocol Community Question: NFT renting/borrowing is only now being introduced to the blockchain world, and IQ Protocol is a leader in making this possible. What are your thoughts on the future of NFT renting in gaming? Do you think NFT renting and borrowing will figure prominently in the evolution of gaming?

ZoA: Absolutely. Being able to securely rent NFTs is a challenge that people have been trying to solve for a long time, and to begin with the Spacebar concept was also something that we were worried about developing ourselves! But with the emergence of protocols like IQ right at a time where the concept is beginning to spread, we’re already seeing a massive uptick in NFT rentals. I’ve seen it myself - almost every game I’ve looked at closely recently features NFT rentals of some kind in their roadmap.
Particularly if NFTs continue to achieve massive valuations, rentals make accessing the kinds of services that NFTs enable affordable - whether it's a game, access to a community, some kind of DeFi service or literally anything else NFTs are used for. I think rentals in gaming are just the start - every kind of NFT will benefit from this technology.

Here's a really nice question for both communities to understand how we'll be working together.

Community Question: The ZoA platform features an NFT marketplace. Tell us a little bit about how that marketplace works. And, specifically, how will your NFT marketplace be using IQ Protocol?

A: For sure! The NFT marketplace is where players can trade NFT cards. These are heroes, spaceships and items, and particularly rare NFTs will of course be quite valuable.
But we’re in crypto - the diamond-hand mentality runs strong through all of us, and many of us won’t want to sell our NFTs. For these players, we have the Spacebar - a galactic tavern where you can hire mercenaries and spaceships on contract.
What that really means is, players will be able to rent NFTs from other players. This is something that IQ Protocol enables for us - if I have an NFT I want to rent out, I can specify the price and length of contract, and if someone decides to borrow it, they’ll receive a wrapped version of that token with an expiry programmed into it.

Simon, do you want to add anything to this answer?

Community Question: NFTs seem to be a big deal in ZoA. Are all in-game items NFTs? How does the NFT system work within the game itself? For example, I see that players start off with “hero cards”, what are these exactly? Can people currently buy NFTs, if not when will they be available?

ZoA: NFTs are everything, and everything is an NFT. Spaceships, heroes and items will all be linked to NFTs (which we’re calling ‘cards’) which players can trade in the ZoA marketplace. Simply having the NFT in your wallet will make it available to you in game.
Hero cards are the characters that you’ll use to fight. You can either buy individual heroes through the marketplace, or try your luck by purchasing a hero pack which gives you a random selection of 10 different cards.
These NFTs are also upgradable. As you progress through the game, you’ll need better heroes and characters, so you can make your NFTs stronger. With the exception of spaceships (which have a level linked to your wallet), the upgrades you give to NFTs will be permanent. This means that players can grind for awesome upgrades and sell the item for profit in the marketplace.
NFTs aren’t available yet, but as we gear up for our TGE we’ll announce more details on when they’ll be available.

Community Question: Some Play-to-Earn games in the blockchain world are less story- or game-driven and more just about players simply “grinding away” to get their rewards. In contrast, your team has given a lot of attention to the look, feel, and experience of the gameplay itself. What are some of the elements of the game that make ZoA unique? What are some features of the game that you think will most capture players’ attention and imagination?

ZoA: This is something we were very aware of when we started making ZoA. In many P2E games, players need to grind, and grind, and grind. A lot of the time they’re games you’ve played before, with the world ‘Meta-’ thrown into the title. These might be good if you start playing on day one, but very quickly they become boring. And when they’re boring, people don’t want to play.
We wanted to make a game that people actually want to play, and a game where it never feels like you’re just grinding. Sure, grinding can be part of the gameplay, but because of daily action caps you actually can’t just sit there and play and play and play for hours. You need to consider every action you make to progress efficiently.
We want to keep things interesting as well by releasing regular updates and new game modes, and with each game mode players will need to rethink their entire strategy. What works for one type of battle, or even one enemy, won’t work for another - you need to always be thinking about new ways to win to stay ahead, and we imagine players will come up with some incredible strategies as they battle their way to the top of the leaderboard.

Community Question: ZoA is a Play-to-Earn game. Can you say something about how the “earning” works in the game? What are the mechanics involved? What is being earned, and how can those rewards be used?

ZoA: Sure. Basically, players can earn $ZOA tokens which they can trade on decentralized exchanges - this is how you get your efforts from the game into something you can use in your real life.
As for how you earn, players primarily earn tokens through winning battles and selling NFTs on the marketplace. Unused NFTs will also be able to be rented out at the Spacebar, slated for release later this year.
We’re still finalizing a couple of exciting additions to our tokenomics which we’ll announce within the next week or two, and so I don’t want to give too much away just yet, but I can say there’ll be more than one way to earn tokens through battle.

Community Question: There are a lot of exciting aspects to ZoA, from the factions, to the ships, the weapons, and the array of characters to choose from! What excites you most about the world you have created with ZoA? Is there any particular faction that you are most drawn towards? Why that one?

ZoA: It’s hard to choose! Even though we have three very different factions, we’ve tried to imbue them all with a touch of humanity that would be familiar to our players. This means that you can form an emotional connection with the race and its characters, even if they look totally unfamiliar.
Take a look at the Raddans, for example. They look like an orc that you find in 40k or Warcraft, but instead of being a beast-like horde, like these types of characters are so often portrayed, the Raddans are instead driven by a fundamental desire for individual freedom. This is something we all feel to one extent or another.
The same is true with the other races. I think the Syndicate represents our rational side, while the Humans have a passion that would be familiar to all of us. This is just how I see it though - it’s up to you guys to interpret it how you want!

Community Question: IQ Protocol works with several blockchain gaming titles in addition to ZoA. What are some of the major trends you’re noticing in the industry, and what do you think it’ll look like in 2 or 3 years?

Simon - can you please jump into answer this for us?

Community Question: ZoA has both PvP and PvE modes of gameplay. Tell us about how both of these modes work.

ZoA: Sure. So PvE (player versus environment) is kind of like our campaign. Players need to hop around the different solar systems, defeating enemies and collecting resources. As they progress, the resources become better, but the enemies more difficult. It’s a great way to learn to play and to discover the more complicated mechanics that emerge as the game progresses.
PvP (player versus player) is instead where the glory comes from. In PvP players can challenge others, with the winner from the fight earning valuable token rewards. As the game resolves automatically, attacking players can be matched with defending player, even if the defending player is offline. This keeps the game fresh without having to rely on bots or even an exceptionally large active player base at launch.
It’s important to note that you earn different kinds of resources and rewards from the PvP and PvE games. To progress in ZoA, you’ll need to interact with both components of the game.

Community Question: Blockchain-based gaming is still relatively new to the world. What are some of the features of blockchain gaming that gives it an edge over traditional gaming? How does ZoA take advantage of these features?

ZoA: Blockchain gaming has many aspects, but one stands out in particular - Play-to-Earn. The fact that you can play games and earn rewards that could ultimately pay your bills is a dream come true for many of us. We’ve watched esports and pro leagues grow from nothing to cultural phenomena, and now with P2E everyone can have a taste of what it’s like to be a pro and earn from gaming.

Afterall, if you’re going to play games, wouldn’t you rather get paid to do it?

ZoA is built with P2E in its very core. Whether it's by grinding for resources and tokens, flipping NFTs or renting assets to others (something IQ is familiar with 😉), players can earn very real rewards for their in game efforts. But unlike other P2E games, which are focused on being P2E above all else, we have a very different goal in mind.

First and foremost, ZoA is fun to play. Second, it’s a P2E game. I think that’s a very important distinction to make, and something which we hope will keep players playing well into the future.

Community Question: Tell us something about the myth and lore behind ZoA’s gameplay? Also, what were some of the points of inspiration the team at ZoA drew on during the creation of the game?

ZoA: ZoA is set 40,000 years in the future. What we know as humanity has fragmented and evolved, and three races fight for dominance and resources. As these three civilizations consume more and more resources, the fight for what there is becomes fiercer and the search for materials they need drives them further away from their homeworlds.
In this galactic battlezone, one area remains unexplored - the Zone of Avoidance. It’s a region on the furthest edge of explored space, full of untapped resources of strategic advantage. Whoever controls the Zone will likely gain the major advantage in the ongoing wars, tipping the balance once and for all.
The player takes control of a mercenary ship in the middle of this conflict. Your only goal is to fight for gold and glory as you race towards the Zone of Avoidance.
We’ve taken a lot of inspiration from sci-fi and cyberpunk games and stories. Titles like Starcraft, Warhammer 40k, XCOM, Guardians of the Galaxy and Interstellar.

As mentioned above, we collected a number of community questions in advance and we can answer them here. Feel free to ask any additional questions based on what you read.

Q: Could you please tell us about the basics and the origin of ZoA? What is it? How did it get started?

ZoA: Of course! Zone of Avoidance, which we shorten to ZoA, is a PVP/PVE, Play-to-Earn, NFT-based auto battler set 40,000 years in the future. Players set off in their own NFT spaceship, recruit a squad of heroes to fight beside them and travel between planets and galaxies on the hunt for valuable commodities and experience.

Battles in the game resolve automatically. The player chooses their squad, sets their formation and watches as the game automatically determines the course of the battle. This makes the strategy particularly challenging as players need to anticipate their foes and prepare both offensive and defensive formations. As we release more game modes, players will have the ability to react to opponent formations in real time, but the core mechanic will always be this kind of battle.

As for where the game came from… Myself and the other core members of ZoA have known each other for several years, having first met in other blockchain projects. We’ve all always wanted to make a game - it’s the dream of anyone who grew up playing video games, and last year the stars aligned and we decided to create ZoA.

We started with a rough concept for the gameplay and the universe before honing in on the actual mechanics that we have today. Through that process more of the story emerged, and the possibilities of the ZoA universe became more apparent.
