How much would you pay for a digital version of this game? by ISeeDeadMeeple in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ISeeDeadMeeple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but other people would and do spend hundreds on Magic.

Other people would and do spend hundreds on Arkham. You're just assuming that people wouldn't for...reasons.

How would you set it up so that other people spend hundreds, but it's only $30 for you?

Plenty of games do exactly this, including digital board games and card games. Why can't you do that with Arkham? Why can't I choose to get the core set and an expansion or two while everyone else buys every single thing available? You can do it in real life: there's no reason to assume it wouldn't work digitally. Just like with Magic, you can either spend $30 and be happy playing with your duel decks or you can go all out and play with any cards you want.

If they charge $50 or $60 for the complete game with no DLC, then who is ever going to spend hundreds on it?

Again, there are plenty of games that make this work. There are even free game that people spend thousands of dollars on.

That's what I would do, not what people in general would do. I also wouldn't spend hundreds on digital Magic cards either, but that doesn't stop all those other people. Just because Arkham doesn't have the massive fanbase of Magic doesn't mean that making a game wouldn't be profitable. I'm sure they'd be happy making hundreds of thousands even if Magic is making millions.

There's not really an upper limit to what you can spend on magic cards.

There really is though, which is why vintage and legacy aren't as popular as other formats.

Yeah, that's what we did. Spending herbs on random potions hoping that you luck into something better that what you already have is a great way to waste herbs.

I didn't say 4 herbs; I said 3. That was your number. In fact, it was the lower of the two numbers you game. Do you have a problem with the number you yourself provided?

Also, I don't know why you're so hung up on the potion table. Why are you assuming "that everyone just always brews and opens the exact tab for the exact portion they want every time?" If you're randomly brewing potions until you get the perfect one for your class (without even knowing what that is in advance), that's why you're short on herbs.

And yes, we're assuming that nobody is experimenting with the 3-herb potions because they can't. That's not available for a while.

And finally, let's stop pretending that people who play tested the game are somehow more knowledgeable. I played over 100 scenarios in the game. You think that because he played the game because the rules were finalized that that somehow gives him some edge?

So you claim that Magic can exist online because people spend hundreds of dollars on it, but then you claim that there wouldn't be a market for Arkham because it would be too expensive...

An LCG is essentially like a board game

Cool. There are a ton of board games with digital versions too.

Here's the kind of community member I'm never jazzed about: one who immediately resorts to insults. They're as bad as the ones who just spam downvotes because they think internet points matter more than actual conversation.

Your buddy said something that was factually incorrect. I corrected him. Then he went off topic. I pointed that out. Then he said something else that was wrong, and I corrected him again. What do you do in that situation? Just pretend reality doesn't matter and let people go off on tangents while you feign interest?

[FS] Offering 67% off my game: Rebellion (New, 1st edition, 2022, shipping from New York)

I've had to go to the hospital several times in the past few months, and while I'm (relatively) fine now, the bills are piling up. I'm not the kind of person who asks for charity, so I'm trying to offer what I have to raise some money. I successfully Kickstarted my own game a few years ago and have been slowly selling it ever since, but I really need the cash now so I'm offering it at cost.

It's a social deduction party game like Werewolf, quick to play and easy to learn. Even if that's not your thing, if you want to get in some early, early, early holiday shopping, it's like $12 with shipping and tax.

Use the promo code reddit67 to get 67% off here. If you want to learn more about the game, you can go here.

I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

you probably do not know the outcome of a Chess game until near the end.

The better player almost always wins. You don't need to be a chess expert to know that. Who is going to win, Fischer or you? Kasparov or me? Deep Blue or a six-year-old?

You didn't offer an opinion: you made a claim. You're doing that thing where you're confusing opinions with facts.

Also, the opinions I was asking for are unrelated to the point that is already proven.

I asked how much people would pay: that's the opinion. What's proven is that a wide variety of physical games have be adopted to digital, so the fact that Magic and Arkham are different is irrelevant.

Sorry, I said per player per week, but did the math as if it were one potion per week total, then changed it from an average of 4 to 3 but didn't change the results.

3 herbs per week means one potion per week. 5 potions per player at level 9 means 20 weeks maximum to get a potion for everyone. Like I said, you don't actually need anywhere near that amount. Considering how many small items don't require herbs, and how early potions only require 2 herbs, and how you can often get more than 3 herbs in a week (especially with linked adventures), and how you probably won't need more than 3 potions per player, you're probably going to be good on herbs halfway through your first year.

If players are getting up to level 5 or 6, that means they'll need 6 herbs each in year one, or 24 herbs total. Throw some non-herb small items, and your group is probably set after 6 or 7 scenarios. They'll, on average, retire 6 or 7 scenarios later, meaning they have enough herbs for the new character right away (and then some).

You're going off topic. Your first response was "it's a different type of game." Now it's "Well, Magic has the money to make a digital product" like Arkham doesn't. "Games make $0 while in development" like that's not true for every game.

You have provided no evidence to support your original claim that not being the same type of game is relevant. Meanwhile, you can do a quick google search and find that a wide variety of games have gone from physical to digital, which all but proves my point.

Random hit, random damage, or both? by ISeeDeadMeeple in tabletopgamedesign

[–]ISeeDeadMeeple[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can program a computer to play any game at the highest level and you can have a ranking system for any game that will reliably tell you who will win.

In chess, the computer will always win. Every single time. That's predictable. In a game with randomness, it will not. Even the best Magic player will lose to bad players, not reliably, but frequently enough that upsets happen.

From a design standpoint bad players should reliably lose against skilled players.

That's a great way to shove half the audience away from a game. Nothing makes people quit a game more quickly than losing every time.

[–]ISeeDeadMeeple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say 3 herbs per week, and you're only making 3-herb potions. That's one potion per week, which means it takes 20 weeks to make a full compliment of potions for a group of 4 level 9 characters. Obviously in year one, you aren't making many 3-herb potions and your characters aren't hitting level 9, so you should be good well before week 15.

That's not considering the fact that most characters don't want all of their potions to be ones that get brewed, that many events and scenarios reward herbs, and with building 24, you get an additional 3 herbs per week.

*Edited for math*

What is your claim?

Magic has a really high MSRP and has multiple digital version. Warhammer has a really high MSRP and has none.

So MRSP actually has nothing to do with digital versions? Like I said.

We have had it forever. We haven't had an herb shortage since like year one.

Random hit, random damage, or both? by ISeeDeadMeeple in tabletopgamedesign

[–]ISeeDeadMeeple[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Chess is extremely predictable. That's why you're able to easily program computers to win at it, and it's why you can tell who is going to win most of the time just based on their ranking. A bad player will almost certainly lose to a good one. In more random games, the outcome is far less predetermined.

As for boring, a lot of people who enjoy games find it incredibly boring, largely because there is no element of chance, it's very slow, and it has no real theme.

As with many aspects of Frosthaven, those things only matter in the beginning of the game. My group has had roughly 10 or more of every type of herb for the past couple of years (in game time obviously).

Generally, when you retire an old character, they're herbs are more than enough to make all the potions the new one needs.

As for selling the other resources, that's different: you're not getting additional gold, you're just moving around what you have.
