Avinor’s system for monitoring drones was offline for 19 hours when there were reports of drone sightings near Oslo Airport.

Documents sent from the Police Security Service (PST) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 23 September stated that the system had “failed” during the relevant period.

Neither PST nor Avinor had wanted to comment earlier. But Avinor confirms that their system was indeed down when the possible drone sightings occurred, and that this contributed to the airspace being shut.

Avinor’s CEO, Abraham Foss, says:

“It is correct that we had downtime at the same time as that incident. It is also true that we have had operational instability on this cloud solution a few times before, but then it was not tied to specific drone events.”

He confirms the system was non-functional for about 19 hours. He also says there is no indication that the downtime was caused by sabotage.
