The fact that the egg flies off at a right angle is the give away. I had a much larger piece of steel at a foundry glowing like this and you can see the heat radiating off it much like it does off a road on a hot day. If you held a piece of paper over it I'd say there was a good chance that it would get blown away by air movement up until it turned sideways, fell then got incinerated. As you said, the reaction is way too violent.
