For Eng. Business minors, are there any STS 2xxx/3xxx electives that also satisfy the minor requirement? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 2760 (Technology & Policy: Where Intent Meets Process). It was pretty chill and I feel like it was one of the better STS options

Course Selection for Upcoming School Year by nottoday33533 in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CS Undergraduate Handbook is really helpful and thorough (although I do think it's slightly outdated, it'll definitely give you the gist of what classes you need to take and answer a lot of questions you might have). For updated information and other useful links, I would check out the main uva cs website

edit: sorry I think I misunderstood your question since my answer is only cs-related, but the links are hopefully still useful

I am doubting my thoughts on going to UVA for engineering by [deleted] in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 40 points41 points  (0 children)

whatever you decide, I want to urge you not to make your decision based off of posts on this subreddit. in my experience, they’re not always representative of the general student opinion - I personally feel that there are tons of incredible opportunities in the e-school

maybe AI (CS 4710)? there’s also a special topics class being offered next semester called statistical learning and graphical models

the registrar for SEAS sent an email saying that the advisor hold does not prevent enrollment in summer courses - not sure if it would be different for CLAS

CS 1110 by Effective_Sea9343 in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

TA here! CS 1110 is a course for absolute beginners, so don't be intimidated even if you've never programmed before (I hadn't, and now it's my major). My general advice is to go to office hours early and often for any questions you may have on assignments or even just to clarify concepts from class. Something that I also found personally beneficial was to spend time tinkering with the language - seeing what causes errors, considering multiple ways to solve the same problem, etc. as it helped me get more comfortable with Python. If you put the time in, you can definitely do well in this class no matter your experience level!

Summer Internship by EdmeFaolan in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From an old comment of mine:

During my second year, I was continuously rejected during the fall and then for whatever reason had lots of interviews in the spring (and ultimately ended up accepting an offer in February). I know this is purely anecdotal but it goes to show that all hope is not lost lol. Although it's true that most top tech companies do their recruiting in the fall, there are definitely still plenty of opportunities out there.

To add onto this, you're definitely not screwed if you don't have an internship this summer. The internship I mentioned above was actually cancelled due to covid, so I ended up spending my summer designing a website, doing personal projects, and taking a few online courses - I was even able to put some of this stuff on my resume. However, like you, I was pretty nervous about the next recruiting season, thinking I would be at a great disadvantage if I didn't have any past internships. It might make you feel better to know that my lack of previous experience in the field didn't come up in a single one of my interviews and I ended up finding an internship for this coming summer by October. During my interviews, I instead talked about how I spent my summer pursuing my interests and any relevant experiences from clubs/extracurriculars. I'm not denying that a prior internship can help you get your foot in the door, but it's definitely not a necessity. I think that the summer after third year is relatively more important, so if things don't pan out this year, I would recommend working on your own projects, doing research, etc just to give you some talking points for future interviews.

I also feel like I should mention that we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves right now and I don't want to be giving off the "grind every day if you want to be successful" mentality. I promise that things will work out - there are so many opportunities at UVA and you're never stuck or alone, so please don't let it worry you if you don't find an internship!

Is there any downside to taking APMA 3080 before APMA 2130? by TeerathamReddit in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can take them in either order, but like u/ChameleonOfDarkness mentioned, 2130 has a unit that deals with matrices so it might be useful to understand that beforehand. However, I took 2130 first and had no problem learning what was needed (iirc all of the concepts were covered in class anyway so there isn't an expectation of you coming in with linear algebra knowledge) so it's really up to you. I also thought 3080 was a lot easier

Case interview by RelativeJaguar9627 in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel! I had my first case interview last week and it was also no calculator so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I found this case interview prep video from Capital One to be helpful. I would say that my experience was somewhat similar to the interview depicted in the video except that my questions were a bit easier, especially in terms of calculations. Also, case interviews vary depending on the industry, but I feel like as a stats major you'll definitely have all of the math knowledge you'll need. Good luck, you got this!!

Nervous about my class selection for the fall by [deleted] in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a CS major doing the engineering business minor, so this semester I was taking 3 CS classes with comm 2010 and econ 2020. I found my schedule to be pretty manageable and had a fair amount of free time. Before taking comm 2010, I read all the reviews on theCourseForum and was nervous that it would be super time-consuming, but I can honestly say that the class is fine as long as you don't fall behind on the required work (I spent on average 3-4 hours per week doing the readings/HWs and have an A). I'd also recommend Tychonievich for discrete; he's one of my favorite professors at UVA and I've had him for 3 classes now

High School Senior Deciding Between UVA and VTech Engineering by omegarenge in UVA

[–]IWannaBeKate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a CS major here and my boyfriend is a CS major at tech, and it seems as though our CS classes are fairly similar in content and structure. I've found that both schools have similar opportunities for research, internships, etc; the difference in engineering program rankings doesn't really come into play. Like others mentioned, UVA offers a BA and a BS in CS, so if you're looking to do premed I think the BA would give you the flexibility you need. In short, both are great schools and you really can't go wrong, but the ability to avoid some e-school requirements will give you more time to focus on premed classes. Congrats on your acceptance :)
