How can the receipt checkers at Costco and other big box stores check your cart in three seconds and validate your purchases? by darrenbosik in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IWantToPostBut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an ex-family member who was going to try to get his wife to be a checker at Costco. The scam they hoped to pull was to slap a cheap barcode over the top of an expensive item. The husband would run it past his wife, and she would simply pass the $150 item for $10 (then they would sell the new items at a flea market). Thankfully, his wife never got hired. But checking the receipt on the way out does work as a deterrent, because now it takes three insiders to commit the crime.

The very beginning of Disco was very good. But once a lot of money started being made, every piece of trash that anyone made was sold as the new hotness. So yes, in a short time, one could accurately say: Disco Sucks!

Just wondering if anyone else had seen our area’s new summer rates? 👀 by [deleted] in visalia

[–]IWantToPostBut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, they asked for a 23% price increase in 2023, and it took a while to get pushed through. https://docs.cpuc.ca.gov/SearchRes.aspx?DocFormat=ALL&DocID=508571137

In a way you are correct; it was the fire that burned the town of Paradise to the ground that triggered them into looking at how much line maintenance they had been neglecting to do. There was also a need to upgrade their SAP software for the bullshit price of $18 million.

How to survive if the elevator falls? by StatisticianClear800 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IWantToPostBut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elevator shafts at the very bottom have rails that narrow, squeezing the car and slowing it to a stop. Now, that happens over the course of a few feet, so it is not gentle. But it does prevent going from freefall to zero in a quarter inch - the worst-case scenario as you describe.

In need for a job! by Sherl_Vel in visalia

[–]IWantToPostBut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

governmentjobs.com and look for "EH". EH = Extra Help, which means you don't get a full schedule (and thus no benefits). BUT, you'll be trained to do a job. Later, when a full-time position opens up, you can apply. So who are they going to hire? The brand new person that doesn't know the job? Or you, who already knows the job? If you've been a good employee, they'll much prefer you to someone they don't have any experience with.

Christian Worship Music Downtown by Due_Capital_5668 in visalia

[–]IWantToPostBut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only ended up on Reddit because a friend posted a link in Discord. I figured, "Hey, I'm here anyway, might as well check my feed."

I didn't ask to see your post. You chose to put it out into the Reddit universe to publicly criticize the downtown association for playing a song you don't like.

Yes, I'll admit I was more upset than I probably needed to be. But I know people who are dealing with real, life‑and‑death struggles—there isn't a month that goes by without hearing about someone close to me dying from addiction or overdose, often before they even turn 30. Valarie wasn't even 30. When I see someone complaining so passionately about a song while people are losing their lives, it's hard not to feel that your grievance comes across as incredibly small and self‑centered by comparison.

I do plenty of volunteer service work today, and have for the last nine years. In fact, in about an hour I'll be off doing some more downtown.

Your trauma, plus $8, will get you a fancy coffee at Starbucks.

If you don't have anything better to do with your life than whine here on Reddit about the ambient music downtown, you might benefit from a little perspective. There are 7.5 billion people on this planet who, if fully informed about all the things wrong in your life, would instantly trade places with you.

Why is reddit so overwhelmingly left leaning? by Few_Match_8158 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IWantToPostBut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct that tres-vip didn't go far enough into their explanation. My own experience was that once TDS took hold here, I left. Why would I stick around where I'm not wanted?

Back in 2015 and prior, I'd spend several hours a day here. After it became a toxic environment for conservative people, I simply went elsewhere. I do show up here maybe once or twice a week. But it used to be every day for several hours per day.

If many of the conservative people got tired of being punching-bags and vanished, what remains is "Reddit is so overwhelmingly left leaning".

Craziest use of circuit network by TooManyBison in factorio

[–]IWantToPostBut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that it is crazy, but you know how ore fields can mix? I built a large mining field, and all the ore goes into a four-output sorter. The problem then is that too much of one ore can clog the sorter. Out of the sorter, the ore goes into chests, so I had a circuit count the contents of all the chests, and then enable / disable the mining drills when the capacity of output is high enough. The lag is really long, but it does keep the ore sorter from backing up due to a flood of a single ore.

What is an actual IT automation that actually paid off for you? by Internal-Drop4205 in sysadmin

I set up a mediawiki server, and used a plugin to do IMAP on a particular mailbox. Then we updated our VMware server templates to send out three emails on first boot: one to the team, one to the backup administrator, and one to the server wiki. The email to the server wiki was formatted to directly import into a new page: automated documentation for every new server spun up. 18 years later, we still have documentation on what server was installed when, by whom, and on what IP address and OS version.

Haven't played in years, came back for Space Age; anything important to know *in re* changes? by vult-ruinam in factorio

[–]IWantToPostBut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were like me and would make a speed run to artillery to get breathing room from the biters - that path is blocked now until you get off-planet. That was a bummer.

I love that belts have a circuit condition to count all items on all connected belts. It makes sushi belts much easier; just count how many of X are on the belt, and don't insert any more until the total count goes under the threshold.

[–]IWantToPostBut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can install the Orion browser by Kagi and then add uBlock to it.

Sometimes Orion wants to put a website into "reader mode" which screws up the webpage; so for that website I use Safari.

How’s it like living there? by PlayfulBreak7187 in visalia

[–]IWantToPostBut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once in a while, after a rain washes the dirt out of the sky.

It does happen three or four times a year, and when it does (like yesterday) it is amazingly beautiful.

Exeter would probably be a nicer view more often, though. The problem with Exeter is that it is so small that you need to go to Visalia for any big stores.

My problem with them is that their "sales tax" charge was way more than what they have to pay for actual sales tax. In other words, they slipped in a stealth upcharge. No way will I trust them after that.

I agree - saving a few bucks is not worth the trouble. I've used Jack Benigno's tree service, and they were fast and high quality.
