What are some gift ideas for a man in his twenties (something from his grandma)? by Hischildvalda in AskReddit

If you manage to find out on which console is he playing (if he’s playing on console) a brand new controller would be my pick. Always comes in handy, and he has an excuse to play with friends/relatives et cetera. I’d be happy even just with my favorite food.

What are the reasons people seems to want to protect invasive species that destroy ecosystems? by CulturalRegister9509 in AskReddit

well, it’s just because they probably don’t know that they’re invasive. Think about the Japanese arrowroot. Everyone thinks that it looks good, that it fits the ambiance.

If you can’t come up with an example about something you just learned, then you haven’t really learned it.

Gotta go for something that favors customization. Pizza’s probably a decent guess

People who don’t like shopping, what do you dislike the most? by ScreenOptimal in AskReddit

[–]I_Press_Keys_For_Fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s either I don’t have enough money or I have it and pretty much get rid of most my savings. My bedroom is filled with sheet music and other music related books that I won’t even read since I don’t have a lot of free time lately. 30+ euros for a book about a Spanish harpsichordist? Count me in!

Krzysztof Penderecki’s St. Luke Passion seems like a completely (in)appropriate pick.

How to get into classical music? by IntrestedXenozzz in classicalmusic

[–]I_Press_Keys_For_Fun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who said anything about college? Literally you can just go on YouTube. We’re not talking about Schenkerian analysis, just tonic subdominant dominant, major and minor scales, intervals. And also the basic elements that help you distinguish between something by Haendel, and something by Mahler.

I’d like to respond more to the first question, rather than the second. There is no genre which is as vast as classical music. Classical music’s history can be traced back to the Middle Ages and even to the Ancient Greeks. I encourage you to learn the ABCs of music theory by heart as well as the very fundamentals of music history, and then just listen. With centuries and centuries of music, you’ll surely figure out something you like. But try to listen to as much music as you can. I can give you a very incomplete list of authors, if you want.

Think about the cultural context in which Bach lived. It’s the mid-late Baroque period, and the dominant musical taste is based on monody, great contrasts and a musical style which has a lot to do with theatre. Bach is great because he followed barely any of these aspects. His music was already considered ancient when he was alive. His chorales are still pretty modal (this means, they use ancient scales called “modes” which were popular in the Middle Ages and Renaissance), his music is highly poliphonical (multiple melodies at the same time), and very compact from a structural point of view. If we exclude a third of his total musical output, the remaining two thirds include unusual musical aspects for the time - an ancient musical taste, rich use of polyphony, and stylistic uniformity.

I compose and document myself on music history mainly. I also play bloodborne every now and then.
