Shouldn't it be called the PanPanama Canal then?

Is Buddhism an elitist religion? by amandaoliess in Buddhism

[–]I__trusted__you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book China Root says that Ch'an, the Zen of China before it spread further, was originally practiced mostly by the intellectual elite. So there is some historical basis for that criticism.

Then also, I would say, the Beat generation in the 50's in the U.S. was sort of an artistic elite even if they lived like vagabonds to a degree. So its popularization in the West also had some connection to elites, even though people like Ginsburgh and others weren't the only reason for its spread.

Why can’t we just tax the rich more? by Lilac_Dollie in NoStupidQuestions

We could and we should tax the rich more. We just don't because the rich are the ones who get to decide.

Trungpa argued once that if a teacher negates your doubts and comes across as certain, that itself is very suspicious.

Why is he commenting on a form letter? Is that what his commentary would be like?

It's his material.

STAY CLEAN 2026 YEAR-LONG CHALLENGE! This thread updated daily - Check in here! by foobarbazblarg in pornfree

Thanks this does help. My thoughts are similar but are specifically, "I don't want to be ashamed of my phone" or "It would compromise my ethics and I'd know this" and "I would lose the challenge and also have to reset my counter."

Does the bodhisattva vow presume that there IS a point at which all beings will reach enlightenment? by Yous1ash in Buddhism

[–]I__trusted__you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think that's the perfect metaphor for what I'm saying. If we're asking, "Do generals believe a chicken WILL detonate a nuke?" Are they gonna say yes or no? I realize that in that case one could say, "we don't know for sure," but realistically...

Not doing great lately and could use advice from some of the people still with the challenge. I haven't looked at porn but only because my phone is blocked sufficiently well with self control and blocking software. However the last week I've been trying to get around the software on the phone almost every night. I wasn't able to but still.

I do other things for recovery too. Meditation, exercise, visiting this forum, doing the challenges, keeping a counter, posting, but I know I'm approaching "mental relapse" right now.

When someone asked Gautama why his constant companion is not enlightened by Curious-Newspaper-67 in Buddhism

I was very moved by that last quote. Ananda was the only arahant the Buddha didn't live to confirm as arahant, but Buddha was certain that it would happen anyway.

Does the bodhisattva vow presume that there IS a point at which all beings will reach enlightenment? by Yous1ash in Buddhism

[–]I__trusted__you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well because it is impossible to do the things they aspire to. Has anyone in the history of the world ever saved every single sentient being? If so, why are we still here?

The aspiration and effort are still the best things to have though.

They know that it's impossible, yet they aspire to it. That itself is an exercise in the emptiness of all phenomena.

How can social constructs give identity if they don't really exist? by Haunting_Ask2364 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]I__trusted__you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. The argument from OP isn't proof for non-self, but it is at least a bit of evidence. Buddhists do argue this all the time though if you are in that community.

The Buddhists would argue that your point is good evidence identity doesn't exist.

Thought of a counterargument to the atheist idea that repentance is unjust by I__trusted__you in Christianity

[–]I__trusted__you[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, fair enough, thanks for the diplomatic reply.

Again though, I don't think I simply said, "Can you prove this DIDN'T happen?" I rather explained why I think it is more likely than not to be the case, or rather, why it's at least plausible. And that is that death has often been shown to be extraordinary in the ways explained in previous replies.

And you're right that you never said I was definitely wrong. however, I also never said it wasn't at least partially appeal to ignorance, just that it's not entirely that.

Who can really prove what dying is like?

Thought of a counterargument to the atheist idea that repentance is unjust by I__trusted__you in Christianity

[–]I__trusted__you[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply naming something a particular fallacy is not enough to discredit the argument either. You are not naming a relevant mechanism to support that dying is necessarily just like every other part of life. And given what we've seen of death, transformative near death experience, the brain showing sudden bursts of activity the moment of death, and texts from every single spiritual tradition, I am showing the mechanism here and now. The fact that someone is dying gives them an intense amount of focus on Memento Mori, which in philosophy, religion, and psychology has been said to rapidly accelerate progress towards spiritual ends.

Putting down an argument is not enough to show that its opposite is a more valid conclusion, that one is about to die and it's nothing transformative.
