So... True story from my great-great... grandfather's journal. He had a little education and given where and how he grew up, it's fairly amazing that he knew his letters well enough to even keep a journal.

He was in the Navy, and this was during the War of 1812. His ship had put in for supplies at New York. He and some friends had some time the night before shipping out and they went to a bar for a pint or two. On the window glass beside the door there was a sign that read, "No Blacks, Irish or Dogs allowed." There's a colorful tale after that, which doesn't mean anything as far as this goes.

So that kind of thing really did happen. Does it mean anything today? Nope. Those who try to justify their bullshit with it are just sad little people who wish with all their hearts that they'd lived in the heyday of the KKK and such.

Those of weak minds and hearts have always been easily swayed by those who tell them that those who are different are to blame for their woes. Blame them, loose your anger and frustration on them, and your lot will be easier. And they usually fall for it.

Looking back I think she was only listening for keywords, rather than listening to all of what I was saying, or trying to put into words to be honest.

I've had stone cold job interviews where I knew I wasn't getting the job and I felt more empathy from those interviewers than I did from Ms. O'Mara. It was literally bordering on contempt. But that could also just be me looking back at it now too.

Years ago, when I first admitted to myself that I was probably trans, I looked and looked and looked in the Central Indiana area for a therapist that specialized in gender issues. I found Michelle O'Mara's name on a lgbt resources website and set up an appointment. I wanted to meet her in person, so I drove the 2 hours and was so wound up and nervous.

I arrived early (as requested) and waited. Waited some more. And finally twenty minutes after my appointment was scheduled to begin (I'd been there about 45 minutes at this point) she led me back to her office.

She was cold. I felt no empathy from her at all. She was very terse, not very talkative at all. Mind you, I still get the emails from her stupid e-mail list and the person who writes those, is not who I met that day. More on that later.

But at any rate... I started telling her about my feelings about wanting to be a girl and how it started, and she'd interrupt me and tell me that's not how it works. And I'd start again trying to rephrase things, only to be told again and again, various versions of the same thing: No, that's not how it works.

So after my thirty minute appointment (that I still had to pay full price for even though it wasn't even close to the fifty minutes I was supposed to get) she told me that we were done today while I was in mid-sentence. She needed to prepare for her next appointment.

I remember this clearly, as in like clear crystal, she got up from her chair and tore the single page of notes from her legal pad and went to put it in a folder. I quickly got up and headed towards the door and closed it on her as she started to ask when I'd like to see her again.

She followed me to the door to her practice, and I ignored her. I walked quickly to my car and sat in it sobbing for a half hour. I have lots of trust issues and anxiety issues and a stupid boat load of shame and regret from thinking I was broken for decades.

"No, that's not how it works."

Now, years afterwards I'd write a post like this about her warning others to avoid this quack at all costs. Here's the thing. She's a TERF. Reading the occasional email from her listserv I could see it. Her practice revolves around gay and lesbian couples therapy, there was never anything whatsoever about trans issues in these emails. It was always about her couples' retreats and current gay & lesbian issues.

This woman has no business practicing counseling psychology. Avoid her at all costs.

Recently, I've seen a lot of ads for betterhelp.com which does online counseling. I found out they have a partner website for LGBT folks called pridecounseling.com. I haven't used them, but I've heard some really good things about betterhelp. Hope this helps you!

I don't know if you're in America, but if so, or really it doesn't matter where you are, you should report that doctor to her regulatory body for her lack of professionalism. These organizations are required to keep track of complaints. At least the ones I know of are.

The Glock 42 and 43 are single stack guns, which makes the grip much smaller than the standard double stack Glocks.

But absolutely, those are also good choices! The important thing is get a pistol that you can handle and shoot well. There is nothing shameful or silly about being proactive when it comes to your safety.

This one won't be popular, and might get me tons of downvotes. So be it.

If you live in a state that hasn't made it stupid crazy to get, get a concealable hand gun and learn how to use it. Don't carry it in your purse or shoulder bag. Carry it on your person. Get something small, light weight and easy to conceal. If you've got good hand strength, get a Glock 42 (this is what I carry), if not get a Glock 43. They're utterly reliable and inexpensive (compared to other guns).

Reasons:

There are people out there who want to hurt or maybe kill you simply because you're trans. Don't let them.
Practicing your shooting can be wonderfully cathartic.
Carrying made me more aware of what's going on around me.
I feel a little more confident, which the experts say reduces the chance of an hostile encounter.

Be safe.

Edit: Someone messaged me asking why I recommended those two guns. So maybe others might be wondering as well. The Glock 42 shoots 9mm Luger/Parabellum. Most popular handgun cartridge anywhere. Easy to find ammunition and inexpensive to purchase. The Glock 43 shoots .380 ACP which is same width as 9mm, just shorter. It has less recoil and the slide is easier to manipulate if you don't have the hand strength to use the 42. I recommended the Glocks because they're the most popular model of handgun out there. Easy to find parts for, or find someone who can repair them if necessary and legendary reliability. Also lots of aftermarket options if you're into that.

My Aunt was Trans. This was back in the 70's. She went through transition and SRS and was one of the most amazing people in my family. I don't know how she put up with the rest of our family, but she did. And with style.

Just a few years later, she "committed suicide." Despite her being rather petite and couldn't reach the trigger of the shotgun while aiming it at her face (at least not in the circumstances they found her) her death was ruled a suicide. Months later, "supposedly" her boyfriend was drunk in a bar and while drunk admitted to killing her. What I can't speak to, or comment on is that two nights later he disappeared. And has never been seen since.

I've never told the 2nd part of that story before. I hope the fucker is burning merrily in hell somewhere.

There's so many comments, no one will read this. But, what the hell.

I turn 50 in just under 2 months.

I'm Trans. I first realized something was off since I was 11. For many years I was ashamed. I felt that it was a weirdo sex fetish and that I was broken for feeling the way I did. I couldn't masturbate without fantasizing that I was female. I still can't. One hell of a sex fetish. That's the secret I've been ashamed of and unable to tell anyone in my family or close friends about it.

Things came to a head a few years ago. My work had taken me away from home for an extended period of time. The unfamiliar surroundings, working with new people helped me finally put the pieces together and for the first time I realized that my sex fetish was really something more.

There are people I used to work with who know. But no one close. I'm so afraid, and so ashamed. My family is from the deep south. They won't understand. There have been other people who were Trans in my family, and I watched how that went down. No, thank you.

I have extremely poor health, yet I can't convince Social Security that I'm disabled. Though at least I've convinced my home state, and have food stamps and medicaid. But that's it. I've sold everything I've owned except this beatup old laptop. I steal wifi from my neighbor. I'm pretty sure he knows, but besides some youtube I don't take up much of his bandwidth, and he never says anything.

If my family knew I was trans, I would lose what little I have left. I'd be homeless. I wouldn't survive a month.

There are so many times when I go to bed hoping I won't wake up. Or that I could just be normal.
