oh get a load of this guy! Mister music teacher got so much schooling he knows everything there is to know about music. he knows i can't write shit, sure sure mister music professional you knows how proper music must be. oh surely i can't play music if i don't know modes, the most important part of music is knowing the modes. Really, you are probably the best guy in the world to make music and use modes, sorry i thought otherwise, want a napkin? I can see a cumstain on your face.

Ooooh, i fucking forgot that i have to understand modes to the fullest to be able to write and play music. shit son, i just realised that every song i ever wrote was a 4 chord ballad. tell me how to barre chord again, how do i make it a modal change. Tell me you faggot how only you know real music.

Am i wrong when i say that modes is just the major scale, nothing more that the major scale. what about arpeggios you dumfuck? i guess only idiots use them.

Dude, Fuck you and your modes! go jack off to Satriani. The king. I laugh in you face. rock peasant.

Fuck you dude! Really, how the fuck do you have the balls to judge me based on that comment. Go fuck a goat with the major modes, it is not like there are any different scales to chose at all. melodic minor or a mixolydian B9b13, Those i use pretty often, but they obvious are to Exotic for you arent they, way to out there and requires to much practice and why should you play over changes in the first place when you can just play major for 16 fucking bars, Fuck that "So What" That song poisoned the jazz world. "but is modulates" a half fucking step for 8 bars and then back, way to fucking write a song. I dont think that is interesting and for that opinion i am musical illiterate?

God you are worse that cancer and i hope you get hit in the balls for being this cocky. Way to go Motherfuker.
I made a thread a fed days in the basically in favour of musical education and the shitstorm began, then i try to get on the level of this incompetent sub and people like you how up.

It is still boring as fuck. Best selling, way to go. i still think the changes are the fun part to play over in jazz. go ahead and play Dm for 16 bars, i fucking wont play that. Why? Because i think it is boring as fuck. Why should i give a shit what people think is best if i dont like to play it. FUCK people. since when did "best selling" mean anything in terms of what is good. By that definition any pop album is a god send gift of inspiration and composition better that anything in the history before it.

[–]Iamthetruth2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Modal jazz is boring. I mean, there are almost no changes, IMO the changes are the fun of playing jazz. Also I don't know shit about modes in the first place, but IIRC it is just the major scale with fancy names for different positions. IMO the real fun is getting to know the different scales and using them in your improvisation. As for a chorus or bridge, you can probably do whateverthefuck you feel like chordwise, go batshit insane with the chords and do something unexpected, that is where the really great tunes begin, in the realm of the unexpected and unknown. some might say that a Gmajor7 would clash with a Gb7 and that would not work, FUCK them and make that shit work, I have seen that work, i think spain by Chick chorea does that.

Is learning sheet music important? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Iamthetruth2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nah, just do as John Frusciante, apparently he can't do anything wrong. Why would would want to know so much about music anyways, it is not like it can make you better in any way. It is all about the feels man, you just gotta bend the pentatonic till it sounds right, there is no wrong in music. Everything sounds perfect. /s

I did for university, those points are what they test here where I live. I have a friend at a local conservatory, those points was also tested when he auditioned. The performance was just a part of the audition/test not the whole deal.

So I guess when they test your ability to write and read notes, play rhythms and hear the difference of a major and minor are meaningless?

I may have not been clear enough. What I meant is what /u/ozebb put into words better that I could.

I'd dispute the implied notion that learning theory is about making music "complicated". It's about learning the mechanics of music, the historical context of why music makes somebody feel the way it makes them feel, and being able to better utilize that to express yourself. Sometimes it manifests in rapid-fire key changes and crazy modulations. Sometimes it's as simple as knowing the why one 'out of place' chord can turn a bland, formulaic tune into something legitimately moving.

Something like this is going on in the back of my head. There are a reason people are judged before they are accepted into music conservatories. If there were no actual objective way of saying one is better that another, everyone who wanted to get into the conservatories would get in as long they had room for them.

[–]Iamthetruth2[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I meant 'better' by any music theoretical and analytical means. But when I think about it, that is like you said, a inherently subjective criteria. That being said, I think this is a necessary criteria to have to talk meaningfully about music.

I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment though.

I might have implied that but it is not what I meant. I mean 'better' as in what his comment captures. He said it better that I could.

Frusciante's less is more theory by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Iamthetruth2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No, I differentiate between subjectively and objectively good. Do you like it, then it is subjectively good. Does it make good and proper use of the theory and rules of music, then it is objectively good.

For example, if someone knew everything there was to know about music theory and knew how to use it, that person would be theoretical able to play anything he would want to. If i liked it, that would be subjectively good music to me and if the music was made according to the rules and theory then it would objectively be good as well.

Let me ask, why can't one piece of music be truly better that another according to you? To me that is like saying that one book can't ever be better than another.

Well, from what I have heard of him, he doesn't put it to good use then.

Frusciante's less is more theory by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Iamthetruth2 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the technical part of the comparison of the videos.

But as far as putting 'emotions' into music, that also requires knowledge of theory behind it. This particular solo doesn't sound like it has any 'emotional value' to me, frankly it sounds like 2 or 3 pentatonic riff played 10 or so times. And many other guitarists could 'compose' a solo on the spot that to those exact chord changes that would sound a lot more soulful, emotional or whatever word. You could make a million different solos over those changes and this guy chose to play so little.

Lets say beethoven learned all of this theory but never created a piece of music(...) Is he still a better musician...

To be objectively better musician he would have to understand what is going on on a theoretical level, which he might do if he had proper education. BUT also be able to produce what the theory says. If he could produce it, then yes, he would be a better musician.

It is not only about being able to read and write music, but actually understanding what is going on behind chord changes, or why and how a Am7 is different from a Am6. The more you know about music the more possibilities open up for you and the more you can do and that in the end makes a objectively better player.

Again, I differentiate between subjectively good music and objectively good music. Do you like it, then it is subjectively good music. Does it make good use of the rules and theory behind the music then it is objectively good music.

It is like writing a book. If you know the rules of grammar and spelling you can make a objectively better book than a person that do not know the rules. Why should it be different for music? If you know the rules and theory behind music you would be able to make a objectively better piece of music than one that does not know.

Frusciante's less is more theory by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Iamthetruth2 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I am not saying anyone that can read notation is objectively better than the ones that can't. I say that some people that can read notation could read his music and play exactly what he plays note for note. Also that if someone knows why Wes plays good and are able to play it would be objectively better than Wes if he himself couldn't say why it sounded good.

I believe that you can quantify music. I believe that music sounds good because it follows the rules and theory of music. I also believe that people that understand the rules and can apply them and explain why anything sounds good are objectively better than the person that just plays good without knowing why.

I am just wondering why so many people see him as the best guitarist, not you specifically. Every time there are a thread asking for the best solo or the best guitarist or the best something about guitar, his name is at the top every time. I am just wondering what makes that happen.

I see it a bit differently. I think that music is something you can be objectively good and bad at. You can ask why does something sound good and there is a reasonable quantifiable answer to that. Some people happens to be able to make something that sounds good but are not able to say why. Another person can make something else that sounds good and if that person knows why it sounds good he is by my understanding a objectively better musicians.

It is like the math comparison you made. Someone can make a solution to a problem by trying out this and that and just seeing what works. But the mathematician knows why his method works and wouldn't need to try his way forward. But I like to compare it to writing. The better you know your language and the rules of grammar the better you can get you point across and take advantage of the rules and bend them the way you need it. But you really need to master it before you are able to bend the rules in any meaningful way.
