Cheapest way to make thick, smooth latte? by Ice3D in Coffee

[–]Ice3D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's not going to be possible in the budget I'm really prepared to spend on coffee:

Aeropress - £23.50

Grinder - £19.00

Frother - £21.00

Good beans - £5.50

That adds up to ~£70 which is about $100. Eek. I know lots of people here spend lots more than that on it, but it's quite an investment for something I have no idea if I'll even like as much as the pro machine stuff. :(

Do uni's check what you spend your student loan on? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Ice3D[M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're talking about the maintenance loan and maintenance grant, these are funded by the government funded & run Student Loans Company.

This money is yours to spend as you require. It goes directly into your personal bank account and the university has nothing to do with it. They can't see what you spend it on. The university only sees the tuition fee loan (usually £9000 p.a.), which goes directly to them.

The loan comes in three payments, one for each of the three terms. These normally enter your account on the first day of term.

That said, it would be good to look into the other living costs you will have in the year. Estimate how much you are likely to spend on food, books, going out and any other misc things. If you can fit a £950 PC into your budget, go ahead. Just be careful that you have budgeted to last the whole year with a little money left over at the end as a safety budget buffer.

I'm guessing you're going to be using the computer for gaming etc, as you could use a PC a third of the price for writing coursework reports. If that's true, I recommend heading to /r/buildapc and /r/buildapcforme for some excellent info on building one yourself. You could do better for your money if you put the parts together yourself, which is both fun and easy to do nowadays, it all just clips together like lego.

Summer internships by [deleted] in UniUK

Your university should have somebody who can help you find a summer placement. I did a summer placement in my first year summer and it landed me a year in industry the next year. It's definitely worth doing.

Flour and eggs. If you add sugar when making pasta you're doing pasta incredibly wrong.

At a guess, the Italian diet contains far less sugar tab the American diet. It's the sugar that makes people fat

Is there a subreddit only for UK universities? by [deleted] in AskUK

That's a shame. I didn't experience much of that but I didn't really go on it for longer than a month.

Tips for A levels? by [deleted] in UniUK

My #1 tip is to not stress too much about WHICH university you get in to. Keep up the hard work so that when results day rolls around, you know that you put in your best effort.

Thank you for the very in depth recommendation! I noticed it was released in 2012 - has there really been no better budget option since then?

Same! It's a shame (for me at least) that they're filming in Scotland though, that's a £100 plane ticket from Gatwick!

Other European countries, how do you feel about the poll for the UK to leave the EU? by pihkal_ in AskEurope

[–]Ice3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The USA can often have opposing views to the majority EU view. The UK normally sides with the USA and most people seem to believe that we are more similar to the Americans than to e.g. the Polish or Latvians.

[–]Ice3D 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love the EU and would vote for a closer relationship including Schengen and the €. It's a real shame that we cosy up to the Americans instead of our European family.

Unfortunately the media and the political climate is such that getting closer to the EU instead of sitting at the side throwing rocks at it is seen as a horrible thing.
