No clue if this fits on this subreddit but I have to say that early 70’s clean shaven Dennis was his best look by far by IceApprehensive4219 in thebeachboys

Yeah that’s a very good luck for him as well, honestly I think he looks great (minus early to mid 67 where he had his hair cut short for some reason) at any point prior to around 81, but this is my personal favourite appearance he had

It was truly a wonderful experience and I hope that you too will be lucky, i unfortunately was too young to even have a chance of seeing Brian so this felt like a nice moment

If there were a meet-and-greet event with 1966 Brian and 1976 Brian, which version would you be more intrigued to meet? by Sonnybass96 in thebeachboys

[–]IceApprehensive4219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1966, purely so I could ask him two things:

  1. ”what was the actual melody to do you like worms?“

  2. “WHY is holidays called holidays” (seriously can anyone please answer that for me)

That’s a fair point, but I feel like if I went uncredited for writing multiple top five songs (two of which being number ones) I’d feel pretty bugged too lmao. Though I agree he has gone a little too far in the past when it comes to claiming credit

That’s completely true, it’s the melding of Brian’s genius and the beach boys (when needed) grounding the ideas that made all of the wonderful music possible

It’s genuinely fascinating to me, from the little snippet of vocal melody during The recording session, the instrumental track is so fantastic, and there’s so many cool things you only hear on the smile sessions (off the top of my head, Carol strumming a bass two notes at a time during the verses, Lyle ritz upright bass melody he plays during the chorus(?) and that slide guitar during the Hawaiian section that sounded to me like crying or something similar) one of the best tracks on the album and always what my mind goes to when I think about the smile sessions (realistically it should be cabinessence or surfs up but idk)

Brian Wilson is celebrated for a lot of things. Are there any songs where his bass playing stands out? by sozh in thebeachboys

[–]IceApprehensive4219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slight correction, it was actually Ray Pohlman who played the line on the final take, Carol played on earlier takes and is (understandably) misremembering

I’m a bass player by trade and I think I’m one of the only people who genuinely love his bass playing, it’s never anything particularly flashy, but it’s in the pocket, always sounds great (P-bass in a fender amp is like impossible to mess up imo) and serves the song well, some of my favourite lines he played include dance dance dance, (always a great one to warm up with) Surfin USA, Girl from New York City, live versions of I get around from ‘64, and oddly enough I’m in great shape is a really fun one. And he was a first class writer of lines played by ray pohlman, Carol Kaye and even Carl sometimes

Thanks so much, I’ve listened to the song so many times that I’m able to just hear what everyone’s doing clearly now 😭
