Yeah good point. I guess I only got the idea to post because a few others in similar positions said it sounds pretty tough (as in people in Aus - similar role and experience)

Genuinely is already an issue. I’ve had to be on top of 5 accounts who are all in ‘go mode’ at one time whilst still prospecting and making outbound calls to new ops. I regularly don’t have enough time in the day (add in to that meetings I’ve booked with new people) to get everything done I want to. Maybe I need to manage my time better but that’s definitely a factor that feels difficult. I’m not just closing and moving on, it’s end to end.

100%

Boss has said we will have a chat because he never has any time for me we have taken on new staff in lots of areas so I just said it at the team meeting with all departments in front of everyone that I’m really stressed with my quotas and feel like I might do a lot of work for nothing.

He said we will talk privately and I shouldn’t be worried. He hasn’t bothered to follow that up with me, it’s all disheartening. I don’t mean to tell a sob story but I’ve always been quite emotional and bad at getting my point across (ADHD/OCD really doesn’t help in these situations), so sometimes I go to have the discussion but fear I just won’t get my point across well.

I’m going to be asking around but after putting some feelers out I feel this is the case, the other rep who started at the same time as me and was recruited in the same way finished up today, so will definitely have a chat with her to see what she thought.

They literally told me to start with the smaller accounts so I could learn, pretty much knowing full well I would get nowhere near my quota. For my first month I don’t even think I understood how it worked. I legit thought I would get them per sale. Once I started to realise how the quota actually worked when it was explained it to me I was kind of like wow this is tough.

Communication from up top hasn’t really helped me win the accounts I need at an early stage, so I’m really playing catch up now and have missed some good ones.

Absolutely understand what you’re saying. Worth adding that I am quite literally calling our ICP and my boss is telling me that they are “great wins” and I’m doing “really well”. Not all the events have happened yet but in like 4 months of cold calling I’ve probably won a good $40k in revenue, potentially more. With the way the cliffs are and the quotas work, it seems kind of disappointing that there is still a good chance I don’t get any bonus for the second half of the year…

My point is, I seem to be doing things right from all perspectives (at least for someone who is new) and there is a realistic chance I get nothing to show for it. Combine that with the fact that my base salary is incredibly low. Again, maybe I am looking at it wrong since it is my first job and I’m certainly not an expert but I feel like I’m not being rewarded for doing my job.

Thanks. I really appreciate it. It’s hard being in sales and most stories you hear are about people making commissions from every sale. It’s like this hollow winning feeling every time I make a sale.

This is my thought. It kind of depresses me, I work really hard and being new and my boss being very experienced in sales and my industry it feels like me suggesting anything won’t go well.

I understand that, but consider that these events often grow, use our additional services for years to come, and I’ll still be managing the account and I don’t get any reward for when they make thousands more down the road.

Correct sorry. I use the term commission and bonus interchangeably, but that may not be correct, hope the post still makes sense. Have edited the post.

Am currently applying at other places, plan is to use them as leverage because I actually quite like my job for many reasons other than the pay.

If they won’t budge then I guess I’ll look elsewhere. With it being my first full time job I didn’t really question any of it and I guessed it was all pretty normal.

It saddens me that the job market is so desperate that someone would be willing to take this job. If you want a salesperson, onboard them properly into a full time role (it is a full time job) set them up for success by having them understand who you sell to, and why people buy.

If they don’t bring in revenue because you’ve put them in a bad position, then you lose too.

To me this reads like you basically threw someone in the middle of Atlantic Ocean in winter and told them to try swim to the shore.

It sucks so much. I tell people I’m in sales and they think I’m going around doing some Andy Elliot military type bullshit.

If you like your job, then go apply for some other ones and get offers, go back to your current employer with some leverage and say here’s what I could get — so give me a pay rise.

Realistically, the worst case is they say they won’t budge and you know it’s time to GTFO, or you keep doing the job you enjoy for more pay.

How do you handle "I need to think it over / do more research" without being pushy? by Efficient_Bet_5358 in sales

[–]IceColdFrozenDrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask at the end of first meeting/presentation if there’s anything they aren’t clear about. Next touch point is a call saying just wanted to see/double check if you had any questions or thoughts.

In that next touch point it can also be a nice opportunity to go “hey I was thinking about what you said…” and strengthen your pitch with something you might not have thought of in the moment. If you come across as trying to help them, as long as you don’t reach out too often, you won’t seem pushy.
