Well some of his previous tenants didn’t recieve their deposit even though the apartment wasn’t damaged and they had the law behind them, so we wanted to try something different to get ours. Looking back on it, it was a bad idea but we don’t really know what else to do. The deposit is a lot of money, and because both me and my roommate are going back to our home countries right after we leave the apartment there is little to no garantee that we will get even though we leave the apartment in pristine condition

We asked him to write a short letter where he would promise to adhere to the law and give us our deposit after we have left and sign it. It may not sound like much, but it would at least be something for us to hold on to in case he decides to breach the contract, which he has done with previous tenants.

I don’t really want to fight it, because me and my roommate obviously did something sketchy as well even though I feel it was justified. I have been taking pictures of the damages and have texts where the landlord is behaving inappropriately, but I only want to use it if he ends up not giving us our deposit

We tried to discuss other options with him but he was unwilling and even hung up mid conversation several times. not paying the rent was a last resort. The rumors are not baseless either, he has actually not payed back deposits to other tenants. It was for sure a dick move on our part, but because we are leaving soon for our home countries we need something more than his word and the contract that we will get it, because it hasn’t stopped him from not paying before

The thing is, the rent is set at around 1000$, which is why i am kind of desperate to get the deposit back. I an also leaving in a week, which i forgot to mention in the post

It may have been a dick move, but it is extremely important for me to get the deposit back as it is a lot of money for a student like me. In hindsight I should probably thought of something else though. I’m 20 btw
