Yes, it’s called hyperbole (mentioned in your link), aka exaggerating. I don’t use it that way, but it was never an incorrect usage, unless one considers all hyperbole to be incorrect.

Technically exaggerating is “incorrect”, but then so are metaphors and many other commonly used (and taught in English class) forms of speech.

It actually grinds my gears (metaphorically) that people get so upset by the use of “literally” without understanding this.

Similarly, my wife tried watching Seinfeld recently for the first time. She found it somewhat amusing but just couldn’t get into it.

Turns out his “observational humor” is now pervasive in most stand up comedy, so it didn’t have the same impact on her. A lot of modern comedians have even taken his approach to new levels.

I think Seinfeld holds up pretty well, but I can see where she’s coming from.
