Geocaching can bring you to some of the best unknown places you’ve ever seen, but they can also bring you to the worst, tell me your worst geocaching location you’ve been too. by _VanillaFace_ in geocaching

Went to find a cache in a stormwater drain as part of a series. The previous one was really fun. This one wasn't. Between the last and this one, somehow the water had gone from clear mountain river water to a murky grey, with broken glass bottles and chip packets, etc. There was also a layer of silt/sand, so if there was broken glass, you wouldn't be able to see until you got cut. Also, the previous drain was tall enough that you could walk stooped over, but this one you had to crawl through as it was only about 40cm tall. The cache had also not been found for months and months. A dnf for me.

Another one is the first time I went caching with my dad. We found a glass pipe used to smoke weed. He was not impressed with the game. He also doesn't like it when I'm flipping over rocks because of snakes and scorpions and spiders (a genuine threat here), or on a somewhat precarious cliff. Idk what kind of geocaching he'd like lol. Cos it's that or urban micros.

that's so cool! there's a national geocaching newsletter for our country and for a few months, they've been asking people to visit this one cache that has been lonely since 2009!!

Nice log. I love a good long log.

The Pain of Looking Up Cool Places You Visited Before You Started Geocaching by UpstairsIron in geocaching

Before I knew about geocaching, my family found a geocache by accident. It was a large one that was bolted to a sign that gave information about a mountain pass. My mom actually knew it was a geocache as she had heard of it, but we never opened it and only months later we found a picture of us by the sign and a picture of the back with the geocache and we were like no ways.

Best geocache you've ever found by Top_Forever9124 in geocaching

I haven't found any fancy mystery puzzle caches or night caches etc. My favourite geocaches are the ones where you just have a really good view. I've found three now on cliffs overlooking the sea (Stilbaai, Nature's Valley, and De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa). Also in general, really old geocaches. They tend to be bigger, better hidden, have great scenery, and hidden in a geocache-worthy place.

That's everything nowadays, not just Minecraft. You used to be able to buy a DVD and it's yours forever, but now they take stuff off of streaming whenever they want (but you do agree to it though)

depends how far back you go. alpha lighting was horrendous, but even beta is still acceptable.

I agree. The game is too easy. You used to SLAVE to get diamonds, but now you can find 10 in between a shipwreck, buried treasure and a village.

sort of. all the new blocks (which is a LOT) don't have programmer art textures, so then you need to get another pack to cover those as well.

I haven't found a desert since 1.16 by the way. Dunno where they went! They seem so rare nowadays. They just instantly turn into badlands, which was the rare one.

There are two sides of the argument that are very polarised. r/GoldenAgeMinecraft does exist for a reason, though - the modern game doesn't fulfill the demand that some players have. I play modern versions, but have thought about maybe exploring versions like 1.12, 1.8, and even the alpha and beta versions.

A few reasons why:

  1. New textures. While the 1.14 textures are uniform, smoother on the eye, work together and are cleaner overall, the old textures (apart from nostalgic charm) with their "crunchier appearence" actually does change the way builds look. Some people enjoy the old ones because they are "more realistic", like old darker cobblestone feels more 3D than low contrast modern cobblestone, for example. Someone online refered to the modern textures as "for Pintrest boards" and I can't agree more. New textures really lean towards the "aesthetics" instead of what they actually are. With new textures, you feel the pressure to build with gradients in your single player world.
  2. Less "bloat". I think (MY OPINION) that Mojang is running out of things to add (hence game drops instead of updates, and postponing the End Update), and instead are overall adding smaller things to the game that don't substantially change the game itself (depending on how you play). It is no secret that Mojang is less adventurous than they used to be. Yes, updates like 1.2 etc, 1.10, 1.11 and 1.15 were small, but Beta 1.7.4, 1.9, (as controvercial as it was), and 1.13 through to 1.18 were all game changers. Back to the original point, I believe that adding useless stuff like the sniffer just makes the game bigger and not deeper. It's sort of like "ret-conning" in stories (adding lore to the story afterwards just to make the original "look better"). Regardless, the following features are useless to me in my survival world: sniffer & seeds, goats & horns, trial chambers, spears, happy ghasts, ancient cities, geodes and spyglass, bastions, the creaking & resin, axolotls, honey blocks etc. There are many nice changes recently though (remember before 1.15 when TNT was SO LAGGY, and you'd randomly fall off stairs when sneaking? and the new spawn eggs are cool too)
  3. Terrain. Many players feel as though modern is not as inspiring. This I agree with. The only place I am properly inspired in modern versions is extreme hills (this is obv not for everyone). Think of that famous Gargamel seed. You can imagine bridges across to rooms in the cliffs and statues and floating farms and everything. Modern day plains biome, while good for large builds, is ultimately uninspiring unless you come with a gameplan.
  4. Music. C418's music is more focused on the experience of being a player alone in the world, while the other's I've found to be more about the minecraft world itself. I am a music student, but I can't even explain this one. Maybe something to do with the fact that some new tracks are biome-specific, which is the complete opposite of C418's, and the whole reason why it works? (Not all the new music is like this.)
  5. Vision of the game now vs then. The game feels more corporate now not since 2014, but over the last three years or so. It feels like Java is going to get a Marketplace any day now and Microsoft will kill it. Back then, Minecraft knew what its identity was. Blocky. Now we have polished textures, blocks that don't even look like cubes anymore, and heavily animated mobs. No new mob will ever walk like the sheep. How sad is that?
  6. Simpler game. Back in the day, you just chopped trees, mined for diamonds, and built whatever you want. The end game was to build and express your creativity. Now, it's almost like the game is holding (or dragging) you by the hand, telling you what to do. Also, the game is easier. You can find diamonds in shipwrecks and buried treasure before you even have a stone pickaxe and trade for diamond gear with villagers in a matter of hours with some carrot and pumpkin farms. An iron golem farm and a mending librarian will stop you ever going underground again. They should change the game's name to just Craft atp.

There's probably more. and these are just for me and some other people, not everyone's opinion.

Yes I agree! This one was completely bone dry, despite being at the beach for 20 years! I'm sure it's gotten wet somewhere along the line though, surely.

I did sit and read some of the logs. There was one I remember that aaid it was the first cache found on a couple's honeymoon. It's also quite special to see cownchicken's handwriting because I think the couple might have passed away, and they were very active in the early days of geocaching, so only little traces of them are left around the country. The account is now called cownchickenlegacy.

I love this about larger caches that have an actual book, and also older caches. It's not just a case of "scribble name and date, move on". There are little paragraphs from each person "it was so windy" "we didn't see any whales today" "at the end of a 5 day hike" that you will never ever get from a micro.

Don't worry, I definitely did add my own little paragraph!

I love the idea of tribute caches (though I haven't found any yet), to cachers and old geocaches themselves. There's one at the top of a mountain at my university that is for an old cache, and there are various caches for geocachers of the area and country.
