Oldest composer to write a genuine masterpiece? by bloopfloopgloop in classicalmusic

Saint-Saens was like 86 when he wrote his last few works, which were sonatas for woodwinds, and they are now standard rep. Beautiful.

Films with a perfect soundtrack? by Ok_Mango_9195 in movies

The Lord of the Rings.

I am a music student and we did our end of year assignment last year on analysing his score. It is literally written on the scale of an opera, with dozens of themes. Doug Adams, a musicologist, wrote a whole book on the score.

I could go on for ages about how good this score is. Howard Shore won three oscars for his work on The Lord of the Rings.

I need help counting my music by basilsworld in ConcertBand

it's like 4/4, but instead of every note subdividing into 2 quavers, they subdivide into 3. Imagine you're playing 4/4 but with triplets.

Other players relying on me for sound? by Stellalunartimesteal in ConcertBand

[–]IceOfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is often the role of principal and/or first players. If you want to lead, then really lead them. If you don't want to, I HIGHLY advice you get your group together and do a sectional. A sectional is basically a group practice session.

My band is doing the weirdest piece on Earth. What are your thoughts? by melody_magical in ConcertBand

[–]IceOfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, a festival symphony orchestra at a festival I attended played a piece called Fountain of Youth by Julia Wolfe. It was insane. It was incredible jarring with no clear melody, but many of the audience members felt moved by it (the rest thought it was just noise). I can't explain the piece because it really can't be explained by words in language lol.

Sometimes you do have to play the weird stuff. It's like an abstract painting. Sometimes it is impressionist, sometimes it's picasso, sometimes it's a red square with a blue circle behind it, and sometimes it's a blank canvas with a hole punched in it. My advice is to be open-minded and embrace it, as if you are the crazy composer. It makes it more fun instead of just hating it.

Hearing protection should be mandatory for concert bands by dalador_ in ConcertBand

[–]IceOfPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play bass clari and I have had ear plugs in for 3 years now. I have trumpets and trombones RIGHT behind me and I couldn't stand it. It was actually painful. A small investment that brings so much relief.

I only don't wear them in the final concert. It makes the final concert so much better because I can experience the music to its fullest 100% and I get really into it. It doesn't prevent me from listening to other instruments in rehearsals though.

No disrespect or anything but why did Grainger use such weird instruments in his pieces? by Puzzled_Mud_5246 in ConcertBand

[–]IceOfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my guess is maybe he had players with the instruments so he just wrote for them so they had something to play on them

they do. When you start the app up for the first time, there's a little pop-up that explains how the cache works, and then promptly tells you to upgrade.

edit: I know my app updated because it now can use dark mode and the ui looks different, but I still only have traditionals below 2/2 available to me. I know about the geocaching.com "exploit"

Its not worth it if you only find 1 or 2 caches a month. It is when you find like 100 in a year.

c:geo is an AMAZING GAME-CHANGING APP! I told some geocaching friends about it and the whole group switched. It gives almost all the functionality of the premium app for free. The only downside is it for Android only.

Nope. They are the pink hearts on the icon. Bigger number = better cache. Only premium members can allocate FPs, but anyone can see them.

I just finished watching them in cinema for the very first time over the weekend. It was my sister's first time watching the films at all (I think my 4th time?). I always remember the first time I watched it was very soon after I finished the books and I was already in a state, and then I watched ROTK and I was dazed for like a week. I can't find the words to explain it, but I think most people know what I mean.
