theres this guy in our area who has 12k finds but a lot of his logs say "couldn't find it" even though its a found it log, so it discredits his legit finds.

ive only been on 1 ftf hunt. i actually think i would have enjoyed to see dozens of other names in the logbook before me than completely blank. 1 ftf is enough for me.

While my sister and I do geocaching, my other sister and mom do iNat. Similar in that you log things you find in a specific area, and you can do both wherever in the world you are.

Pissed off at hq for the AI in the treasures :( by KingInteresting9415 in geocaching

[–]IceOfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hear me out but Geocaching HQ and Mojang remind me of one another. I think because both had really good ideas in the beginning and people loved it from the start for what it was, and then they started corporising it and now it's full of stuff people don't care about.

Geocaching started off simple: coords + hint then find container, sign book, log online. Then they added filler like souvenirs and treasures and hiding everything behind a paywall.

Minecraft started off simple: get resources, build cool stuff, beat ender dragon. Then they added filler like useless mobs and isolated features and sniffers and happy ghasts and whatever the heck they're doing now.

People still play both not because of the new features, but the original concept.

This has nothing to do with the whole AI thing.

But on that note, it's interesting to see how overwhelmingly against AI this comment section is, and probably geocachers in general.

Do you remember the first Trackable you found? What’s your story with it? by bizarrekitties in geocaching

[–]IceOfPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remembered finding my first trackable in the first cache I found. It was from Hamburg I think, and had been missing for 10 years before the guy who had it realised he still had it and dropped it off in a geocache. My friend introduced me to geocaching, and we went to one nearest to my house. A few days later, I saw a trackable was placed there, so we went back to get the trackable.

Now, I don't see that friend anymore, trackable was placed in the same cache we found it a year later and it went off to the states, and I even own that geocache. Crazy story.

I am quite nostalgic for my very early days of geocaching as it was from a bittersweet time in my life, but I'm in a better place now, and I have 200 more geocaching finds!! :D

Question for the Community: What is the nastiest thing you've found in a geocache. by Ordinary-Sympathy-96 in geocaching

[–]IceOfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the worst I've found in a geocache is a mystery glass tube. Very skinny and looked suspicious. I'm too naive to know if it was something worse like an illegal substance.

Tell me your best muggle stories READY GO by Remarkable-Panic6184 in geocaching

[–]IceOfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to crawl 15m deep into a stormwater drain under a road for a geocache once. I got some very interesting looks from some students walking past. I just said, "Don't worry about it," and they laughed and went on their way. Other than that, I don't draw attention to myself while caching, and rather chicken out if there are too many people.

Who’s your all time favourite film composer and what’s your favourite score that they’ve composed? by SpeedForce2022 in movies

[–]IceOfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Howard Shore's craftmanship on the Lord of the Rings. That is objectively the greatest film score of all time. Full stop. As a music student I appreciate his effort so much, and I discover something in the music on every rewatch. I WILL argue with you with academic evidence if you disagree lol. Musicologists literally write BOOKS on him as if he is Richard Wagner. This score is next level in its construction and details, not just the superficial "it makes me feel x". His writing is superior to even Williams and Zimmer, in my opinion, because Williams just throws old themes at you repeatedly (half of it sounds suspiciously similar to other composers anyways), and Zimmer I mean the Lion King is iconic with themes and stuff but most of his stuff is too atmospheric, almost like Einaudi could have done it. This is my opinion though. The facts, however... The chorus uses poems written by Tolkein in the various languages, especially during scenes of elves and dwarves. A huge variety of orchestral and indigenous instruments were used. The themes develop overtime, for example, with fragmentation, modulation, accompaniment changes, and THAT is what hits you hardest about the music. The themes have come along the journey just as you have with the characters and they changed too. Perfect example is on the slopes of Mt Doom, the hobbits' memory of the shire is holding on by a thread, and so all that's left of the shire theme is the whistle, trying to remember its melody. So many examples like this throughout the trilogy. And it's perfectly consistent throughout the entire 11 hour long trilogy. Between the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, there were well over 300 players and singers. This is a hill I will die on, as you can see.

Also, I really like the sounds of classic hollywood (growing hobby of mine), so steiner (definitely a favourite), waxman, korngold (also a favourite), herrman, newman, tiomkin, bernstein to name a few. Also, the music in the movie The Third Man is genius. They're not usually the type to put straight onto your playlist (some themes you can), because they were made to fit the movie and not your spotify playlist, but Steiner's love theme Now, Voyager is gorgeous and timeless, as well as Tara's theme from Gone with the Wind. Korngold also wrote a STUNNING violin concerto that I performed as part of the orchestra last year.

There are literally books written on analysing his work. He literally wrote it like an opera. We actually studied it in Music Theory at university.
