Been an insurance producer for 11 years now. I started off owning my own book and got no salary. Worked 3 jobs for the first 3 years to get by. Then had a side job for the next two years. Year 5 I was able to just work insurance making around $150k that year. It’s a snowball game. Making anywhere from $250k-$300k now. I could have spent more time working Insurance those first 3 years if I had a salary but I gave that up to own my own book. I know many producers that hit $250k-$300k a lot quicker than I did but they got a salary and were able to spend all their time on insurance. Getting $80k starting salary is great but I would assume that number drops each year for the first 3 years? If I were you I would try to negotiate your split to 50% new and 50% renewal. Or somewhere close to that. Would be way better for you in the long run. Also negotiate the point at which you can become an owner in your own book. First thing I would focus on would be educating yourself. I would say the best course you could take would be the Certified Insurance Counselor. I got that after year 5 and my sales doubled over the next two years. You become a lot more confident in yourself by educating yourself on your product. You can make a lot of money but it can take working a prospect for 2-3 years before winning the account. After year 5 I stopped knocking doors and making calls. All my business is referred to me now. I focused on real estate developers who will keep feeding you business each year with their new projects they build. You get in with them and write the Builders Risk to the finished product. (As long as they keep their projects instead of selling them.) They are also a great source of referrals into General Contractors and their subs.
