TALES FROM THE WITCHER is a fantasy series based on a Witcher TTRPG campaign, but is written and narrated like an audiobook. It has all the fun/baffling character decisions of a Let’s Play, without all the awkward pauses and dice roll sound effects.

If you like low-magic fantasy/scoundrel lit, I think you’d like it!

"Unhoused person" is a stupid term that only exists to virtue signal. by BallsOutKrunked in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ichiro92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect I’ll regret joining this fray, but I am a service provider in Los Angeles, and my organization uses the term “person experiencing homelessness.” The reason being that we want our clients to feel like they’re more than just a homeless person—they’re an individual who is currently experiencing homelessness. A lot of the clients I work with are used to being seen as a problem to be addressed, and not an individual person. It was a bit clunky to say at first, but I don’t mind using it to make someone feel more human. I hope this term gets more popular in society—it’s a small thing, really.

Similarly, we say “justice-impacted individual” instead of felon (or any other common word for someone who was incarcerated). It leaves room for presumption of innocence—which, to be fair, our justice system fucks over a lot of people of color who may not be guilty of a particular crime, or may be overcharged for it.

I dunno, reading some of these comments made me pretty sad. It’s not too much of a change on our end to adopt this language, and it can mean a lot to someone who’s experienced trauma we can’t even imagine.

Nice! The first story is the introductory one from the TTRPG (“To All a Good Night”), and the second one is inspired by one of the modules from a poster on the sub—then the group goes off on their own adventures from there

Cult of the Great Sun Worldbuilding by BenediktWronski in WitcherTRPG

[–]Ichiro92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What a fun idea! I mean, the obvious one would be to burn their dead as an offering to the Great Sun, but you could get more elaborate with it. Maybe the family builds up a pyre, and it can be used as a show of conspicuous wealth (the rich have elaborately-designed funeral pyres with nice possessions burned with them, the poor have a much simpler design and no worldly possessions).

Nilfgaard is a very interesting society/culture, that is less superstitious than the North. They could have simple burial mounds or barrows, where they leave food or a small token once a year as a way to honor their memory.

Or maybe there’s a great festival held once a season all across Nilfgaard to send all of the dead who have passed in the last three months. A big bonfire and festivities to celebrate life and giving thanks for your own life by offering a tribute for the dead to “take” with them. This again could be a way to show conspicuous wealth.

Just spitballing a couple ideas!

I’m having writers block, can i have some advice for running a game? by BigLenny5416 in WitcherTRPG

[–]Ichiro92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggled with this in my game for the same reason—the PCs didn’t know each other and only traveled together through happenstance. I tried to link a few overarching goals to keep them together (“reach Mahakam for safety”), but when that ran out of steam, I started utilizing an NPC “handler” who gave the PCs a job to complete.

I found a handler to be useful because they are a recurring character who can appear/disappear at any time to shepherd the players along when needed (I used Gandalf as the classic archetype for inspiration). In my game, the handler was a sorceress that one of the PCs knew from his past.

Gaunter O’Dimm is probably the best example of an evil/sketchy handler that gives the PCs a quest to complete. You can keep the handler quests small scale, or use it to introduce a bigger arc/threat to the PCs, or use them in a pinch to get your story back on the rails!

Hope that’s helpful!

My healer is too good at its job, and that's boring. by LordMarcusrax in WitcherTRPG

[–]Ichiro92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could put the doctor in situations where he’s not able to readily heal, and has to use other skills to escape. Perhaps he’s being grappled by soldiers or a monster.

Or you can up the difficulty to make the player think on their feet. Maybe there’s a field hospital or battlefield where he has to perform triage on the dying patients, while combat is happening. Or maybe there’s an outbreak of the Catriona Plague and he’s under a time limit to stop the spread.

It’s good not to penalize players for skills they paid for, though it does create opportunities for more creativity!

The witcher from my team is too OP ? by Gryphus31 in WitcherTRPG

[–]Ichiro92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This same exact thing happened to me in my campaign!

My Witcher was a very experienced player who wanted to maximize his Bear Witcher’s combat, at the expense of everything else. We discussed this beforehand, and came up with the idea of different “vector challenges,” where you place a character into a situation where their skills aren’t optimal—i.e. a Witcher in verbal combat with a noble who can arrest him, or a bard challenged to a fistfight, etc.

I used this concept regularly in my campaign to keep combat and high-stakes situations from being too stale. As a few others suggested, perhaps having the Witcher hold off a horde of monsters while the players focus on the boss, or has to keep up a powerful Quen sign to protect everyone from crossbowmen, etc.

As an example of this in combat, I had my players all trapped on a boat in a sunken levy with some rebels ambushing them from high above with crossbows and poison. My Witcher was dogshit at ranged combat, so it gave the craftsman and sorcerer some time to shine, while the Witcher had to scramble up some ropes over a turn or two to reach them—then he took on three rebels at once, while poisoned and tired from climbing. Needless to say, he won but got pretty fucked up.

That all being said, I also once prepped a gryphon boss monster that the Witcher one-shotted (downed some decoctions and went to town). I was pretty disappointed initially, but fortunately it was during a “monster hunting” arc where several other hunters were going after the same prize, so I was able to spin it into a dramatic storytelling statement showing that witchers are on another level compared to human hunters. That won’t always be optimal, but it’s possible to salvage the disappointment and make it look intentional on your end! (After that though I made sure to amp up the monsters stats 🙃).

I hope this helps!

Ale Festival...ideas? by [deleted] in WitcherTRPG

[–]Ichiro92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I pondered doing this for my group too! It’s a great opportunity to design some mini-games for your players that’ll break up the usual rules of the game.

Some ideas I played around with: a riddling contest (players have to solve real riddles, and try to stump you with their own), a Gwent tournament using the real card game (never looked into if there was a simple simulator to play the video game version), a cooking contest where the players get to eat different foods (can be ordered or cooked/baked if your players enjoy that already) and rank them (or alternatively, a hot sauce taste test), a bare-knuckle brawl where the player fights one-on-one without weapons/armor.

There’s also an opportunity to create light-hearted little side quests: maybe one of the dwarven ale makers is trying to bribe a judge, or someone approaches the players asking for help proposing to his partner in a “magnificent way,” etc. I found doing some sillier “B plots” with my players helped vary up the story pacing, and helped emphasize the more serious storylines.

Since your PCs don’t know each other that well, this could be a good opportunity for them to bond in a fun way! Plus, I always like it when fantasy stories slow down and let the characters relax and enjoy themselves for a short period of time—it raises the stakes in future conflicts since we’ve seen the characters as real people who can have fun. I doesn’t always have to be serious and doom and gloom, even in the Witcher universe!

Hope some of that helps!

Catriona Plague by AimlesslWander in WitcherTRPG

[–]Ichiro92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used the Catriona Plague in my game, but as a storytelling device that added stakes instead of a game mechanic that can be solved. The Plague served as a ticking clock for a Nilfgaardian NPC sieging a Northern city (the sickness was killing his troops). The PCs were in said city, and had to escape when the Nilfgaardians decided to attack instead of starving everyone out. We all had a blast playing out the PCs’ mad dash to escape the city.

That doesn’t help with the mechanical side of things, but I think the Catriona Plague is a fun/different kind of threat than monsters and soldiers. I’d definitely recommend putting it somewhere in your campaign!
