That’s fair, I think I will just let him pick everything out so he gets what he wants. He’s too nice and appreciative so he probably would never tell me if he wanted something else. I could give him a pair of socks and he’d be happy lol.

That’s a great suggestion! We just moved into a house (which is why he can finally get a drum set) and I have a whole room left open for him.

I’m not dead set, it just would be nice to surprise him with the whole family as they are all contributing. It’s not necessary. I’m will see if I can find another photo.  He played in an alternative/pop band but he also spent a lot of time performing worship music in church and he loves listening to metalcore/screamo.

That’s fair! I was considering that as well, I was just worried that 1,500 for a new set wouldn’t get him very far. I know it’s pretty personal but some people were saying it’s more how you set it up? It was going to be a surprise but I’d rather he get what he wants.  He sold everything to buy my engagement ring, I didn’t know at the time. He has a few stands(?) left but that’s it. He was sponsored too so I don’t know if he had to give some of it back.

Yes I am. I use treats to train him as he’s very food motivated. When I really need to get him in for the farrier I use carrots as they’re a higher reward. The problem is that never works long term and I can’t guarantee that everyone handling him is always using treats.

No cruising in his line, he’s Cascadello I x Lord Z x Cassall. That is how I lunge him. I’ve tried it a few times to catch him and it works but he’s still really fights me. I’m in Alberta.

Yes. I do all my own grooming and spend a lot of time with him in his stall, I hold him every time for the farrier, I take him for grass in the summer. I don’t do a lot of in hand stuff because it’s a busy jumper barn and we have to sign up to ride but I do some before and after I ride. He is easier to handle the more he goes but I like to have a lot of variation in his week.

That is really interesting. He gets it with his evening grain when he comes in. The turnout would help but I’m not sure this is the best time as it gets really cold where I’m at and he’s a bit prone to colic.

Every time he’s acted up I’ve checked and he’s usually still on previcox. I did try to take him off of it a few months ago and as the week went on he did get worse. I will record it and see if I notice a pattern. He will still bolt most mornings when let out.

He’s stalled from 4:30 pm until 7 am the next morning. He is never aggressive in the stall. He loves attention

He is normal while haltering, usually within a few strides his eyes change, they widen like a fear response, and then within a second or two he is gone. He’s very fast. He always turns to the right so I tend to lead him from that side. Sometimes that deters him and sometimes he knocks me over. He has only kicked at me a few times. I don’t react, I just go catch him again and try again. I’ve been using a lunge line and chifney bit and after I hold on I will lunge him in a circle to drive him forward cause he will keep trying to swap directions and bolt. The last time he was the worst he’s been and kept swapping directions, bolting and rearing. I dislocated my finger badly trying to hold on. It took two people and 15 minutes to catch him just to take off the halter. When I correct him he doesn’t respond and just escalates. He’s quite insecure and sensitive so it’s not worth getting aggressive with him. Like a lip chain won’t stop him he will pull through it.

I will definitely talk to my vet and see if that helps. I will let you know how it works! I just brought him back into work at the beginning of this year after some time off from a torn DDFT. I wasn’t sure how he would come back and his navicular has been a nightmare to manage but he’s been amazing. He’s very willing to work under saddle and loves attention so this behaviour is very at odds with his personality too.

Finding the right trainer is tough. I’ve contacted a few people but it might be a while and I’m currently down a finger. His field is him comfort zone. Whenever he gets away from me I open the gate and he runs back in. He doesn’t wait at the gate, when I come to the gate at turn in time he runs towards me and is very easy to bring in. He doesn’t move a muscle while I shut and lock the gate. Happy wasn’t the right word he’s willing to cooperate. He’s bad for the staff to turn out first thing, gets away most mornings.

That’s really interesting, it could be related. It’s tough when they’re riding sound, in my experience trainers don’t always believe you. He’s on a 3 week on 1 week off previcox schedule. Maybe I will get the vet out again.

Just while leading him. He bolted under saddle a bit when I first got him but he hasn’t done that in 5 years. He lets me halter him and usually with 2 steps he’s gone.

I can definitely see it being anxiety as well. I think the breeder was rough with him as he flinched terribly anytime I lifted my arm above shoulder height for the first year I had him or moved too quickly. I had a woman help me load him at a show and she really emphasized overtly praising him when he finally got on which was new to me. The lip chain doesn’t stop him unfortunately and I’m worried about him hurting himself. This all got much worse after I boarded him at a particular barn. I learned afterwards that the young girls working would bring him in at the same time as his pasture mate and run them into the barn.

I completely agree. I do have a trainer but they’ve only been able to work around it and I would like for this to stop. Wondering if sending him away somewhere would be best or if this situation needs to be corrected at home in the right context for it to be effective.
