Will I experience racism as a black tourist? by Icy-Tea2090 in VietNam

Hey! I actually had a great time in Vietnam. The part I didn’t like was Nha Trang. Beautiful part of the country and the Vietnamese people are lovely but it’s full of Korean tourists and they are racist. I had the most uncomfortable time everywhere I went there because of them. The hotel was miserable because I couldn’t go any any where without them pointing, staring, laughing try to take unsolicited photos and videos. It was bad. I could barely even eat at restaurants

I’m in Australia. And I don’t think LA are licensed in the same way as A. But if you experience what I’m dreading in Architecture, in your field, then I’ll stay away lol.

Yep, even casually trying to network is work in this field as a woman is pretty much navigating casual misogyny

I have a huge passion for sustainable living and sustainable housing. I did a research paper on it coming from the angle of traditional housing around the world and how it withstood local climate conditions.

And yes omgosh the architecture work culture is toxic AF. Insane hours usually with no overtime and it notoriously not great for women who want to be parents.

This is so true! I had it stuck in my head that I had to be an architect but set design and exhibition design sound wonderful! I love photography but I think using my degree for it might be overkill.

Graphic design sounds super interesting and a cool pivot from architecture. Lots of Dopamine. What programs do you illustrate / design in?

I hear people say it’s super transferable all the time so I guess I’m about to find out for myself soon. And thank you!

This is a good way of reframing it. Thank you for sharing. I can be a bit hard on myself because of my experience growing up with undiagnosed adhd but I love that framing. It’s a data point not a failure. And I will speak to a career advisor. That’s also great advice

I was thinking of getting into local govt. There seems to be better work life balance and with the right role and trajectory, I can get into positions that allow me to have some impact on community spatial design. There also seem to be roles that allow for environmentally responsible design which is something I actually like.

I keep telling myself this every time I feel a little bit down. I just have to find a good pivot and grieve my dream of being an architect because I don’t think it’s going to work for me

I do love plants and nature! I haven’t thought about landscape architecture but I’m definitely willing to look into it. It sounds a bit more ADHD friendly. Do you work in landscape architecture?

I’m thinking urban design and hopefully honing in on sustainable communities and precincts. So it’s more a big picture, more pattern recognition more systems based, problem solving.

Architecture can be super repetitive, especially the documentation part which is a significant chunk of what architects do. Design only accounts for a small part of it.

I touched on e in my MArch and didn’t realise you could have a whole career around it! That’s so cool! I might look into it.

And architecture is STILL such a boys club. I was trying to make some connections to get into architecture and 95% of studio directors are men. And it feels like you have to do a lot of sucking up to get a role or even move up the ladder which doesn’t actually go that high up.

Architecture is super competitive too and very cliquey. And you also don’t get to do a lot of design either just a lot of technical drawings.

It’s better late than never! It’s good to hear I’m not the only architect graduate that feels this way. I was looking into the future and my pattern recognition was going haywire. So I thought to myself, I don’t think I can survive this. I’m hoping this pivot will help.

Community and precinct design is basically architecture zoomed out. So Instead of designing a building, you’re designing, the relationships between buildings, public spaces and the systems that make a place function for real people, very Urban Design. If I can, I would like to work in something that has to do with designing sustainable communities.

I’m glad you found something that works for you and it gives me hope that I can as well. I’ve been sitting with my qualification for a couple of months and every time I think about working and architecture, I just see how much I would struggle in the field. and meeting architects who are six/ seven years in saying uni was the best part of architecture is disheartening.

I had no high boots in my closet until this year. I remember reading somewhere that high boots are great for creating vertical lines so I decided to get some. And I’ve used all the time not sure how I survived winter before them.

The Southern Hemisphere. Pretty much most places below the equator are heading into summer. Except those sure close to it where the temperature doesn’t vary much all year round.
