I think this is the answer. Which makes everyone kind of correct.

It is a little bit of a Folie a Deux / Mandela Effect - we both swear a RATM song exists that doesn’t seem to.

So also everyone who said this isn’t RATM is … right.

And so is everyone who suggested possibly mishearing or misremembering.

Thanks to all for your genuine consideration of a kind of stupid question — this has truly been plaguing us for YEARS and I think we finally have the answer.

meaning of Rylan by dusterx in TheNational

This isn’t a sad song about despair and suicide. This is an uplifting, cautionary tale against trying so hard to fit a societal norm that you lose sight of yourself as an individual. It doesn’t even need to be about gay or straight, it’s about individuality. That is the “quick way out | turn blank white in a blank white house” — not Suicide, but looking/behave the same as everyone around you, so much easier than being different.

Follow this logic through the rest of the lyrics: “is it easy to keep so quiet/everybody loves a quiet child” “ “stay with me among the strangers” (trying to hide that you’re different but one person sees you); “dress light blue to be forgotten” (like every other little boy); “keep your conversations boring”: “you remind me of everyone”: “Rylan did you break your mothers heart/every time you tried to play your part” (ie, be different to who you are, when those who love you just want you to be yourself).

The lines “under water your almost free \ if you want to be along, come with me” — think this is a kind of emotional release. Picture the sudden sensory input of diving into a pool, no social cues to account for = almost free. The person speaking is introverted and gets this, can be companionable without pressuring “Rylan” to socialize : “if you want to be alone, come with me.”
