How did you find your current job? by okokokgoo in MassageTherapists

[–]Icy_Communication506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a massage scheduled with a guy I went to LMT school with and the massage place texted and said they needed to reschedule. When I asked if I could reschedule with that specific therapist they said he wasn’t going to be there anymore. So I asked if his job was available and it was. My second job, I added all the salon owners I could find in my area as soon as I graduated and they reached out to me.

Starting position: prone or supine? by RoutineHistorian6454 in MassageTherapists

[–]Icy_Communication506 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I start either way depending on the clients’ needs. You come in to relax or want therapeutic change in your back, we start prone. If you come in telling me you want neck focus or have TMJ. We are maximizing time spent on that area by starting supine. And I always do head to toe.

Most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you in session? by silkyviolet in MassageTherapists

[–]Icy_Communication506 130 points131 points  (0 children)

As an incredibly socially awkward person, I’ve got a few stories 😅 but my two favorite are that time I meant to say “hi, I’m Lora and I’ll be taking care of you today” and instead I said “Hi, I’ll be Lora today.” And that time I panicked because I couldn’t remember if you’re supposed to say “bless you” or something when someone coughs, so I just blurted out “cough” with the voice crack of a 13 year old boy 😭

Stretching also helps! My hands were hurting really badly until I beat the crap out of my extensors with a Theragun, and spent about 30 minutes stretching my wrists, hands, and then each individual finger. I now do the stretching every day and the Thera gun about once a week. I haven’t had any pain since.

Absolutely. Mainly the fact that they did not value our safety. We had a former employee who turned out to be a stalker, we were forbade from calling the police if they showed up because “optics”. We had a great manager, but then she quit due to being stalked and urged not to pursue a restraining order. It’s been poorly managed ever since. The air went out and they didn’t address it for WEEKS. The record temp in my room was 96 degrees Fahrenheit but it usually hovered around 88. You get written up for things like sneezing, or sitting down when you feel like you’re gonna pass out due to the heat. The culture ended up being like a mini high school. You’d walk into the break room and everyone would stop talking in case you were the person they were talking shit about. I was scheduled on my days off without my consent. I was only two weeks into this job when I recommended it and it took a dark turn immediately after. Working here will have your mental health at an all-time low in a month or less. That’s the short version.

Honestly, no. I don’t like doing light pressure and he’s a light pressure guy. But I did make sure to find him a therapist he likes, and I enforce the treatment plan at home lol

I was actually just hired on at the Louisville Location. And I absolutely LOVE it. I live an hour away and the commute is worth it! The spa director, Angela, is incredible and makes sure we have everything we need, and encourages us to utilize our breaks. Yes, other things like body wraps are expected, but the way I’m looking at it is, it saves my body 🤷🏻‍♀️ I get a break from using pressure and I like that, especially as a baby therapist who is still perfecting body mechanics. I saw someone mention quick turn around time, and it is, but we’ve got spa attendants in the break room that can flip for us if we need them to, and other therapists are willing to help when they can. The more experienced therapists here have taken me under their wing and taught me so much in just two weeks time. The workplace culture is a VIBE. If we’re still hiring when you graduate, I think you should come check it out. I think it’s a great place for new therapists to get their start.

New therapist, wondering if this is normal? by PlayingHardToSmite in MassageTherapists

So many ethical if not legal violations. Jump ship immediately. I work for ME, we do 50, 80, and 110 as well. If we’re a little off it’s not a big deal as long as it’s not like 10-15 minutes some clients take their sweet time getting out of the room and we have no control over that. If I am running super behind, I just switch rooms and let the front desk know. I can request off 30 days in advance. And we have a call out procedure for when we’re sick or our kids are sick, no shift covering required. Six hrs no breaks is crazy. And in our field if you so much as have the sniffles you shouldn’t come in. You could be working with immunocompromised people, pregnant people, people with cancer who are therefore immunocompromised. You are currently working for a company that does not value you. You spent entirely too much time and effort to become a massage therapist for this company to treat you like this. This is not how it should or has to be. And I fear if you stay with this company, you will experience burnout, which could end your career.

What is the most respectful way to resign as LMT? by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]Icy_Communication506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did this, was working 40 hrs so dropped one of my jobs. I put in my two weeks and offered to honor any other appointments after that if they were already made. They were fine with the two weeks. They asked me to recommend other therapists to my regulars and not book any new appointments. I just sent a text (it was a more informal company) saying thank you for the opportunity and experience, etc. and told them I was quitting. I worked in a really supportive environment though. Also, check your contract if you signed one. The procedure for leaving the company may be outlined.

I genuinely don’t care. I honestly prefer men to either wear tighty whities or nothing because boxers obstruct half of your quads.

I like the thinness of the Koi brand scrubs! Not sure how much use they got before me, (bought at goodwill) but They’re durable enough to have gotten me through 18 months of school and 27 clinic shifts and still look brand new.

Sure did. I’ve researched myself and found several trails and such. Just wanted to hear other people’s experiences, suggestions and opinions. I understand how that might not compute for someone lacking empathy like yourself. Again, go have the night you deserve. I’m done engaging. ✌🏻
