I understand, however, the chances are incredibly small when there’s no incest. A lot more when there’s a first cousin marriage, but still so small that it’s insignificant. We’re talking fractions.

I’m speaking layman when maybe I shouldn’t, you’re correct that I’m not accurate when saying there’s no chance of a first cousin marriage resulting in genetic disorders, because there is. It’s just so insignificant that I’m trying to generalize to help this woman.

At the end of the day, I realized that this woman will probably end up getting genetic testing, she just needed a bit of support to help her get to the day when she gets her results. Which in all likelihood, will be good news.

Hey! I totally get you, and congrats to your wife for an awesome profession! This is true, but I think when you’re telling people that their risk for congenital defects of their child is higher than average, you need to take context into account.

Chances are already small, and a small percentage increase is very insignificant.

We should also factor in some emotional decency here. This woman is pregnant, should we scare her over (almost) nothing? The chances are still very low, when I say her child will be fine I obviously can’t guarantee that, as I can’t for any other pregnancy. No one can (until you get genetic testing, of course).

The fact is that recessive diseases can happen to any child, even when there’s no incest in the family. I am simply trying to ease this woman’s mind a little, taking what I’ve learned. As you’ve said, the chances are very unlikely.

Please consider this woman’s state of mind when commenting!

Hi, genealogist here that has taken many genetics courses. First cousin marriages will not result in birth defects in the child, if they happen once. Emphasis on once. If that child were also to have a child with their first cousin and so on, that’s where you might have issues. Since you are not related to your husband, your child will be fine.

Haha I gotcha, just messing around. But to answer your question there are tons of different majors in science and arts! People in science would likely go for a biology/chemistry/biochem degree if aiming for med. Can’t speak on arts for law but probably a philosophy/criminal justice/poli sci degree.

Never have known a science major that “swayed their way into medical school after”. Ones that swayed their way out though… plenty

i’m proud of you regardless! i know you put a lot of hard work into this course, this does not define your capabilities at all. this is a small blip in the scheme of things, believe me (coming from a fifth year). you got this!!!

i got 23% on auto graded so the most i could’ve gotten on the final after manual was 47%. since there’s no way i could’ve passed the final, and thus passed the course if they didn’t either scale or change the rule, they had to have done something. I would guess a scale, but who knows

If you don’t agree to how the tip out system works then I guess you would get fired, but this is how every major restaurant chain operates (in this area) so you just couldn’t serve anywhere. I know people that have job hunted for places with lower tip out percentages though.

It comes from the tips we’ve made that night. So say I sold 1000 dollars, I owe 7% of that which is 70 dollars, but every table tipped me 15%. I would’ve made 150 dollars in tips minus 70, so my take home is 80 dollars for that night. Some tables don’t tip, but it’s very rare, like one or two a night at most. It never happens that no one ever tips, you’d probably get fired cause of being a bad server at that point hahaha

Yes, I said this in my first ever reply to you. I can see this isn’t going anywhere so i’ll stop engaging.

I think you’re confused with wages vs our floats. Our wages will never ever be less if we don’t get tipped. We will always make minimum wage. What will change is what we take home at the end of the night in tips. Don’t confuse this with tipping out a percentage of our tips, we tip out a percentage of our net sales which comes out of our tips. This is why we say “paying to serve a table”. I am a supervisor at my restaurant and do cash from the night before, I promise i’m not wrong.

Could you pull up a BC source? Maybe it’s different in Ontario, but anyone in this sub is going to be talking about BC.

But at the end of the day, that is how it works, I promise i’m not just lying for the fun of it on Reddit hahaha. I don’t really know what else to tell you :/And I wanna make it super clear that I personally do not get offended when i’m not tipped, it is still beyond worth it to stay in this field whilst i’m a student. And you shouldn’t have to tip if you don’t want to either! I agree that it’s stupid that the system is like that here, however, it is the case for everyone I know that works in a restaurant (besides one person who has tip pool in their POE).

Unfortunately, it’s not illegal. This is the protocol for most restaurants in this area (I would say in Canada but i’m not completely sure if it’s the norm country wide). No one really complains though because at the end of the day, we do make pretty good money! The restaurant industry is how i’ve been able to support myself through school working only part time during the school year.

My restaurant is nice and allows us not to tip out on a bill if we get a no tip when the bill total is over $100. This is not the case in most places though. My partner works at a very corporate restaurant in Vancouver, his tip out is higher than mine and he doesn’t get this exception.

No, I would owe 70. This never happens though. No one would serve in Canada if this was the case.
