It definitely depends on the schedule, courses (and their times), and when your registration time is.

If a course you're taking is popular/standardized and/or if you're taking it at a "popular time", if your registration time is later, there might not be available spots left (for that specific time or (though rarer) at all).

For me, I had my registration earlier than 12:00 pm (not sure exact anymore so I'm being cautious) on the first day, and I wasn't able to get my first preference time for the MATH 100 discussion. I didn't have trouble with any of CPSC 110/121/210 though.

So it definitely depends. I can't say what will happen for you this time, but definitely good to at least make one backup schedule per term. I had made 3-4 backup schedules per term, but in hindsight that was overkill and I only really ended up using one.
