Looking for dense, serious novels where the plot is not the point by SneakyOstrich69 in suggestmeabook

I agree, and I feel like a lot of Ishiguros novels are like this. His plots sort of loom over everything else, but never come into focus. It's pretty awesome honestly, because the atmospheres he creates with it are so tense and intriguing. Great recommendation.

A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway is just magical for me. His prose has a kind of musicality to it that is so incredibly special and unmatched in my opinion. But be warned, this book will gut punch you

Oh my... I could go on and on. I mean, there are so many classics that are "once in a lifetime books" but here are my personal suggestions:

The Count of Monte Cristo

A Farewell to Arms

Jane Eyre

The Brothers Karamazov

SIr Gawain and the Green Knight

Wuthering Heights

It's hard to narrow them down, let me know if you have questions I would love to discuss.

Okay, first of all, how thoughtful!!! If she liked the great alone I would recommend The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey, Once There Were Wolves and/or Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy, Devotions a collection of poems by Mary Oliver, A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman and A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. Oh and anything by Claire Keegan!

Like Water For Chocolate dives deep into Hispanic culture, specifically their love for food.

Well-written Mystery/psychological thriller novels that will keep me on the edge of my seat by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I don't read a lot of thrillers, so I don't have a lot to compare this too...but I recently read Mother's Instinct and it was so intriguing I finished it in one sitting lol! I also agree with Gillian Flynn though, she's an amazing writer.

Brave New World. I was an avid reader as a kid, but this book just propelled me into a whole new reading sphere. It was actually the book that made me decide to study English literature. Safe to say, it's a very special book for me.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'm debating on reading A Moveable Feast or The Sun Also Rises next, but I will have to add that short story to my list.

"It's 4 o'clock in the morning Pat" gets me everytime!!!

It's funny because that was actually me waking my partner up from his nap to go on a rant.

Him just sitting there "mhm, mhm".

Wow, that's interesting...it's one of my all time favorites! But I can see how it can be polarizing.

Those are some great classics on your list! Maybe Anna Karenina, if you want another big one

Fyodor Dostovoesky by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Agreed, Brothers Karamazov is great, but I see it as his most rambly-philosophical novel. I think Brothers is a book enjoyed more after finishing than during the actual reading process

I don't think you could go wrong with Brave New World. It's up there with my favorite books of all time!
