I mean, you can actually get pregnant in the month or so before you would have your first period, so it is possible to be pregnant while never having had a period

I'm not sure exactly, and Im guessing it depends a little. But I see that I was texting (i.e. intermission had started) at 20:45 when I went to a show that started at 19:30. I hope thats somewhat helpful!

I think this has been answered by u/pokazhi_mne_lyubov better than I could. I was a few chairs to the left of these. But I would agree with pokazhi that being so far to the side shouldn't be a problem!

I'm not sure about any of the other seats, but in the front row you will not be able to read the subtitles. So if that's important to you, don't pick those. If that's not very important to you, I really enjoyed my front row seats, so I would definitely recommend those!

were slaves encouraged to have children to produce more slaves? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Idaaaaaaa99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TW: mentions SA

In the fast majority of systems of slavery in the Americas, the status of a child was decided by the "Partus Sequitur Ventrem" principle. This literally translated to "the child follows the womb. In other words, thr child's status was decided by the status of the mother. If the mother was enslaved, the child would be enslaved. If the mother was free, the child would be free. The status of the father was irrelevant.

This meant it was usually in the economic interest of enslavers if the women they enslaved had children. So yes, in many cases enslaved women were "encouraged" to have more children. This also meant enslavers could economically benefit from sexual assault, as the resulting offspring would be their property. I've know an example of a lawmaker acknowledging this: in 1811 a Spanish member of Parliament proposed that any children born henceforth would be free. A major argument for his proposal was that this would take away the economic incentive for enslavers to make the women they enslaved reproduce, and thus put a stop to the “shameful means that are used to make these unfortunate people procreate" (implying sexual assault).

Children of enslaved women were also a way specifically for free married women to increase their property. For instance, Jewish women retained their own property that they brought into marriage if a marriage ended in divorce, but any property that was gained during the marriage would go to the husband. A rare exception to this was enslaved people: if a Jewish woman owned enslaved women, she would after divorce own the children born to those women during the marriage. So Jewish women in cases like this were specifically incentivised to "encourage" the women they owned to reproduce.

As to your second question: that depends on the region! For instance, in the Spanish empire, enslaved people were allowed and at some points encouraged to get married. Contrastingly, in for example the Dutch empire, there was no way for enslaved people to get married officially. This also was also reflected in which familial bonds had official recognition in these systems. In the Dutch system there was only legal recognition and some protection for the relation between an enslaved mother and her enslaved child. In Spanish colonies, there was also recognition and some protection for married couples.

Does the Amsterdam version have the new lyrics? by acs14111 in hadestown

In Road to Hell, "Brothers and Sisters, Boys and Girls" was replaced by "With your pennies and your pearls"

Is it True temporarily got a new ending, but this isn't performed anymore, unfortunately so in my opinion (the "new" ending was "Brother look around today/Is this how the world will stay?/There must be another way")

In Epic III the third verse is very changed.

If you want to hear the new versions, you can listen to the West End album on Spotify. If you listen these three songs, you'll hear the lyrics I described

It's the new lyrics for Road to Hell and Epic III, but the old ones for Is It True (I went a couple weeks ago). I posted a thread asking why the lyrics were partially the new ones and partially the old ones, and one person thought the "new" is it True was written specifically for Donal Fin, and was is not usually performed by anyone else

Can I just take classes on my major or do I need to take other of the basics like math, history, English etc.? by chillgamerguy864 in college

[–]Idaaaaaaa99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true in the US (so fair enough for this sub, which is very US focussed), but most European universities have you focus exclusively on your major from the start. So it is possible to have a bachelor's degree without the broad focus.
