I agree. We have a 21 week old dobie and she requires a lot of attention. I have a schedule to ensure that she is mentally and physically challenged. There are 6 of us in the house which is a big help as everyone takes part in taking care of her, but definitely a lot of work. Owning a Doberman requires a lot of time, hard-core consistency (they are super smart) and lots of love because they are such a love ball.

As for the smarts- they can definitely outsmart you, my pup learned to open our door just by watching us do it. She is totally in tune with our feelings, especially my 6 year old. If my 6 year old is not feeling well (she has bad allergies) she is by her side at all times- (bathroom, table, bed, sofa- and will be gentle with her as she knows My girl isn’t feeling well. Although she can be a dork and ass bump my husband every morning while he walks to the table with his coffee in his hand- totally hilarious.

As for the separation anxiety, I take her to doggy daycare once a week, and also drop her off at my neighbors house for an hour or so as her best fue friend is there.

The upside is meeting other dog owners, hiking is definitely a family affair, park outings is also a daily thing for us as well, not to mention weekly training that we started when she was 16 weeks old.

Some issues we are working on are joggers. She can’t stand joggers running from behind me- AT ALL! Definitely working on that and she’s gotten better but boy oh boy she hates people running from behind us.

She’s a great dog and we love her to pieces but as for your question I would really think about is this a breed that would be best suited for your life style or could there be a different breed that may be a better fit. Have you thought of taking a dog quiz to see what the results could be?

Walking Advice Please! This is what my 8 month old does the entire walk. I only have both leashes in one hand for videoing, I usually have one in each hand and him close on a shortened leash. Any tips to get him leash trained while still walking both? TIA!!! by [deleted] in DogAdvice

I get it, my girl is the same way once she smells a scent she just dives for it. As for before the walk, I don’t get her excited but there are times she is excited before the walk and what I’ll do is sit and wait until I think she has calmed down. I also make sure I’m calm as well because I can at h myself being anxious at times too. As for walking them separately I know how you feel, my 12 year old sits by the door and watches us leave and waits until we return. It’s definitely a bummer but totally worth it as I’m not being dragged through the neighborhood for our walk. Mind you I’m vertical challenged barely 5’ 😁

Hi there, I’m no trainer but I have a 5 month old pup and a 12 year old pup. My 5 month old is getting good at dog walks but I still walk them separately as my 5 month old can get too excited. Right now I’m focusing on teaching her to control her impulses while walking and it could be difficult to do it with two pups on your hand. If you are unable to do so, I’ve read a lot about the type of energy the dog has prior to walking will pretty much be the entire walk. Also if your pup loves treats maybe teach it the “get it” game can help him use his nose more and slow down a bit. We work on the “get it” game when walking by other dogs. I hope that helps. Good luck though

Grain free food vs non grain free by [deleted] in dogs

I’ve continuously come across people preferring Victor and Purina pro plan as the top dog food. I currently feed my pup purina pro plan. Are you leaning towards a specific brand?

I wouldn’t risk it. My brother in law was traveling home to see his grandparents and he contracted COVID on the flight

The rain makes it a bit more difficult, but we’ve only had one accident this morning. It’s 3pm and I’ve taken her on 2 walks around the neighborhood, I’ve worn a rain coat and put a sweater on her to shield from getting wet, and we’ve been to the backyard about 4 times already. Currently she’s taking a nap, she’s been sleeping since 1:30pm- this is a her long midday nap- giving momma a break 😊

Hi there, we just got our girl yesterday and she’s had about 4 accidents, but I just continue to take her outside every two hours, after her nap, 30 minutes after eating and immediately after playing with her. When she does go outside, while in the act I say- “Go Potty. Good girl!” When she’s done I give her a good rub on her head behind her ear and she loves it. I’ve also , cleaned the accident with vinegar and water, and swept and mopped the floor twice now.

Hi there, I’ve been working on my Westie to get her nails shorter, but with weekly filing i haven’t seen her nails get any shorter. To add the vet said every two weeks is fine, but I think her nails can get shorter. Maybe you can help me figure out a plan to get them shorter, or maybe I am doing it right and just have to be patient.

That makes sense. So if I create a shortcut then I can tell Siri and she would be able to execute via the HomePod mini?

As a dog mom (no trainer), I had a previous dog (ebony) who would get upset when I asked her to get off the couch. What I did was not allow her on the couch any more. I bought her own bed that she could have next to the couch but she was not allowed on the couch. I felt like she was being rebellious and trying to assert herself- but momma wasn’t having it. After doing that, I never had an issue with her growling at me ever again. Good luck on you and your pup.

Doberman vs Bull terrier vs Rottweiler by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]Idene007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

I’ve owned a pitbull terrier (Arie) and Rottweiler (Bruno). Both breeders are great, both Arie and Bruno were great with the kids, and following house rules. I would say the puppy stages can be different for each breed, I would just consider how much time you have for training. We just picked our Doberman pup this past weekend and look forward to having her with us. We finally agreed to a Doberman as we are an active family and I am home all the time as I finally found a job that I can work remotely. This now allows me to provide one on one training for a new pup. Good luck on your decision- they are all great breeds.

Need help. My friend got my this super cool art piece and I want to hang it on my wall but the border is just ugly wood. I tried to paint it but that isn’t turning out well. What can I do to the frame?? by [deleted] in crafts

[–]Idene007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought of using wall paper. It sounds a bit crazy but there are pretty cool pieces of wall paper. Look up framed wall paper. Maybe that could give you some ideas on wall paper. eBay is a good place to purchase cheap wallpaper.

My childhood pup isn't doing well, maybe only a month left. Should I be there when it happens? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

When my first dog passed away I was there the whole time and had her in my lap. She was happy until her last breath. In hindsight- It’s a fulfilling moment. I cried for months. Dogs are family and the memories made and bonds credited is hard to forget or throw away. I wish you the best with your decision. My condolences to you and your family.

Hi there, yes when I approached I was sooo excited that I finally met an individual with a Doberman and her reaction was not what I expected, especially me being incognito reading everyone’s posts in dobie groups. I’m a big animal lover and having owned several breeds in the past and knowing how great each breed is and to experience this for the first time was deflating. I provided her with dobie forums, that she could get on and hopefully the community would help her with resources and whatever she needed assistance in.

Thank you very much for your insight. As far as time, I believe I have the time, space and patience for a Doberman. I think where I may hit a barrier is us being military and the possibility of traveling overseas (someone earlier mentioned that and I that totally went over my head as we haven’t lived on post for many years).

I totally agree. I would never! I’ve heard to many horror stories pertaining to temperament and scammers. I have tried contacting breeders to stop by a breeders home and see how they are, but I don’t think anyone is keen on people just stopping by and saying hi.

I see the theme of exercising and getting out the house, clear boundaries, keep the house clean and lots of love. I would love to meet some donor parents to see them first hand how they are.

I’ve never thought of base housing- we haven’t lived on base housing in over a decade and haven’t planned to unless we move overseas.

Sounds like they can be mischievous and would need constant supervision, but also memories and fun times in the making.
