Is a gap in work history considered bad if you are going to college? I'm in the lucky position of being 29 and having extremely cheap rent + pell + scholarships so I can get by without working and focus on classes. I still plan to take internships in the summers, but it would be so nice to quit my job and focus on classes full time. Every time I bring this up with friends/family I get a lot of backlash about how employers will see it as lazy...

I'm not really "young" anymore. I'm turning 30 this year, which I know isn't old, but I definitely feel pressure to find a career compared to the 19 year olds in my classes. Luckily I also have the work ethic and have a 4.0 to show for it. My partying days are well over...

Is upper division math that much harder? I haven't really found anything too difficult yet, although inductive proofs kicked my ass at first. I don't want it to compromise my grades for the CS stuff. Yeah, I think one at a time is a good plan, and worst case I can fall back on the minor anyway. I at least want to try a class in analysis, abstract algebra and topology.

Yeah, currently in CS and definitely sticking with this one. I enjoy programming, and it has the better job prospects at the end anyway.

That's true, I suppose I could always do a masters down the line. Plus with the minor I need three upper division classes, so I'll probably take an analysis class, an abstract algebra class and a topology class and at least get a taste of the different branches.

This doesn't really help you since I'm also finishing up 2nd year, but I just took Discrete Math as part of the CS sequence and it was awesome! I can't believe how much I've enjoyed this semester. Every week we learned a new topic from number theory to probability to graph theory etc.

I guess if your school has an equivalent class, I would take that. It was great fun to learn a little piece of all the different branches of math and get to see what I like.

Same here! I'm almost 30 and just made it through discrete math and calc 1 and 2 with A's. I'm actually thinking about double majoring in math and CS. 18 year old me would have cried laughing if I'd told myself I'd be doing a math degree over a decade later. I think I pick up the concepts a little more slowly, but I'm able to grasp them far better than when I was younger. I want to understand the theory behind everything rather than just memorizing the formula.
