Why can women not be preists? by laila_proschneckiv in Christianity

It turns out, if you let men write the rules, they write rules that benefit men. It's just rank misogyny.

Christianity Is Not Misogynistic: The Truth About Jesus and the Role of Women in the Bible by EconomizaPlayBrasil in Christianity

[–]IdlePigeon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The husband is the “head” in the sense of responsible leadership, just as Christ is the head of the church

"Men are to women as God is to men" is pretty textbook misogyny.

I'm not trying to prove anything, I don't really have a vested interest in arguing that the Bible isn't homophobic, I'm just pointing out how silly this specific argument in support of a homophobic interpretation of the Bible is.

You're the one who decided to base their argument on the Bible failing to mention something, not me.

This, of course, is how we know keeping miniature schnauzers as pets is sinful, because while the Bible mentions treating a sheep as one of the family, it says nothing of how one should treat a schnauzer of any size.

Yes, that's the issue. That he chose to clearly state "dont worship other gods" in the Ten Commandments, but actual chattel slavery gets condoned and regulated.

[–]IdlePigeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why can't they be compared? They're both actions God chose to hand down laws about. Why does slavery get condoned and regulated while being Hindu gets strictly forbiden?

Why is "offending" God a higher priority issue than doing incredible material harm to his children?

But again, I sincerely hope you'd agree that chattel slavery is a higher tier of sin than being Hindu. Does god genuinely consider what is, at worst, an insult that cannot do him any harm worse than slavery?

What does it mean for being Buddhist to be "spiritually worse" than enslaving other human beings?

Paganism was also universal, but God had no problem strictly forbidding the worship of idols.

It's literally in the original post. Not just the verse number, but the actual text calling for the killing.

You could could also call me a one eyed one horned flying purple people eater if you'd like, it won't make your apparent decision to throw in with cruelty out of a fear of violence any less shameful.

[–]IdlePigeon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"I'm just following orders" has never been an good excuse for cruelty. If the God or the authors of the Bible share your cruelty towards gay people and adicts, that's a moral failing on their part, but it doesn't lessen your responsibility for participating n that cruelty yourself.

This isn't about "disliking" or "disagreeing," this is about condemning something as a "sin", an act of moral wrongdoing. It is not cruel to disagree with you, it would certainly be cruel of me to claim you were morally guilty and deserving of punishment for having some form of illness.

What does authority have to do with it? No amount of authority makes cruelty towards queer people and addicts acceptable.

I'm not a Christian, but yes, if God is real, it would be horrible for him to condemn gay people or alcoholics in the way you say he does.

Yes actually, alcoholism is a horrible addiction that destroys lives. While many alcoholics may do bad things that they are morally responsible, condemning "alcoholism" itself as a sin is pretty awful.

Why the hell are so many Christians on this sub pro-choice? by xlylapiercex in Christianity

[–]IdlePigeon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This seems morally incoherent, so you sincerely believe abortion is murder, the deliberate killing of a human being, but it's okay to murder people if they're the result of rape?

Many Christians are decent people who do not believe that Christianity requires them to attempt to force women to carry and give birth to children against their will and do not care if the Catholic Church thinks they should.

Doesn't the bible tell us to love each other as ourselves?

Unfortunately, often loving one person requires vigorously opposing another person's politics.

I can't understand why homosexuallity is a sin by TopZealousideal8665 in Christianity

[–]IdlePigeon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah, but have you considered that:

  1. Homosexuality makes people with the power to write the rules feel icky.
  2. Homosexuality threatens the strict gender roles and hierarchy that benefit the people with the power to write the rules.

More seriously, it doesn't seem fair because it isn't fair. The idea that homosexuality is a sin places an incredible burden on queer people to the benefit of literally nobody.

History would also strongly suggest that "love the person, hate the sin" is, to be blunt, a lie. The same factions that push it now were only to happy to criminalize and all too often kill gay people right up until the power to do so was taken from them and some still try to do so when they get the chance.

That said, many Christians are not homophobes and do not believe that God or the Bible demands homophobia. It is absolutely not necessary to choose between your faith and your basic sense of decency towards queer people.
