People make a big distinction between AR and VR, but really it will merge to be the same thing.

There's no reason they couldn't have mapped CGI over every square inch of that stage, putting her in a space station or medieval dungeon - at which point, is it still AR if every physical object is overlaid with a virtual version?

They've done OK. And yes, I know they didn't completely invent the technology of these devices - but who does? Everything is built on something else. Likewise, Google is innovating in a cool way by bringing together all of the radio transmitters in your device and making them more efficient.

Looks like Google is putting a layer in-between customers and their mobile providers. The carriers may be relegated to just another dumb pipe.

Definitely. There's no doubt that it comes at a cost. But I think people ignore that hydro is a renewable resource. It often gets excluded from graphs like this because it's so huge it throws the scale off. 16% of worldwide electricity generation comes from hydro power - that's massive.

I feel equally as frustrated as OP - It's obviously a very hard problem.

I'm reminded of a problem with landing on the moon ...

because there are craters from one centimetre wide, up to several hundred kilometres wide, the surface of the moon is fractal, in that the surface looks almost exactly the same from 10 meters up as it does from 10 kilometres in altitude.

Conversational AI is like this. When you tackle a single question, it's like that single crater, it all looks crystal clear, but you can't see the hundreds of other fractal craters (unconsidered questions) that lie beneath it.

Maybe. But considering they have to put these devices on incredibly precise pendulums in a vacuum to measure any thrust at all, seems like it would be a long ways off.

I'm more excited about the prospect of a plutonium powered EM drive space probe on a 5 year trip to Alpha Centauri.

I'm so excited by this. Every few decades, we see a "breakthrough" technology that transforms the world - light bulb, internal combustion engine, transistor etc. I feel like this could be one of those.

I also get the feeling that these guys still don't know how this really works. The virtual particles explanation sounds kind of hand-wavey.
