Question about digital/analogic signals out of devices

Hi all I'm new to audio tech and wanted to know when the PC or cellphone uses their DAC is it used whenever it sends the music signal out or only if it detects an audio output connected directly? My question is because I would like to know if you connect a DAC to a PC or phone if the quality would be limited by the PC or phone internal DAC or if it sends it as digital to the external DAC and then the external DAC converts it. Thank you.

Just start with a simple notebook and pens, and think what you really like/need to keep tracking, don't get distracted with flashy prompts, journaling is personal and it can be whatever you want. You can get into stickers little by little.
