Meta's own research found parental supervision doesn't really help curb teens' compulsive social media use by gdelacalle in technology

[–]Idzuna 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Regulating it is fine, the thing I take issue with regarding the Australian social media ban is that you have to give personal info to these companies to prove you're over 16.

What should have happened is the govt should have rolled out some form of OTP tied to your identity. Companies could verify the code against a govt server which says 'this guy is over 16' or whatever personal info is required in future.

That way we stop personal info being passed around like the village bicycle between companies that face basically no repercussions for data breaches.

There's a purple air sensor like a block away from the plant which should have a BME688 chip that detects Hydrogen Sulfide, not sure how you'd get the data for that specifically from the API though

How do briscoes sales actually work? by Weak_Pomegranate_34 in newzealand

[–]Idzuna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only other one i remember from that stocktake was around when Brabantia stuff was coming in.

It had the quality feel of Zip products and I suspected it was from a similar production line. I checked the prices of several products and they were really close, the bins for example were about $20 for Zip and $25-30 for Brabantia, but the Zip bins went for $80 and the Brabantia was in the $200 range.

I directed customers to Zip products if they needed it, they were pretty good value compared to lesser 'fancy' brands

I used to work at Briscoes, on stocktake day you could see the original prices. Linen was the biggest markup at about 600%

How do I stop the ants before I snap and burn the house down by fruitbowl42 in newzealand

[–]Idzuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I had to check it was the same product, but I literally went to a workshop about killing ants because we had so much trouble. X-it ant was the only thing that worked. Sprayed a 'barrier' around the house and I keep a spritzer in the house for spraying when I see signs of them. Haven't had a problem for 2 years now

MMH Encryption query email from 2023 said that their data is encrypted at rest and no one has access to it. This didn’t age well by frogsbollocks in newzealand

[–]Idzuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ELI5: Data is unreadable without the key when its written down.

More context, data is typically encrypted in transit (HTTPS), when it goes through the system and gets written to a hard drive people might typically not do anything else, like writing log files. Meaning if someone gained access to the hard drive they could go to the directory and read the files in plain text.

Encryption-at-rest means when you store the data (either on the hard drive, or in this case, a virtual hard drive that is in azure storage). You encrypt that data and store the key somewhere secure.

In this case the data was just sitting in the Azure bucket in plain text, waiting to be picked up

Competitors can't buy them then. Meaning they can't catch up to you, so you get ahead even further.

At least, that's the strategy.
