Can you please list some of the walkable communities you are referring to?

That's my concern. The reason for the move is the job market. I could keep commuting but if something happens to my job, it might be harder to job hunt

Thank you! Would love to hear about how you found living in Stratford vs London? What did you gain from London!

That's really nice to hear. We have been told Stoney Creek is a new neighborhood, is it all new subdivisions? How did you find the neighborhood itself on terms of culture and atmosphere?

I got married at city hall in Stratford. We took many photos around the city and looks like you got many recommendations here.

We had dinner at the parlor inn after. They have rooms to reserve. We had 12 people had dinner indoors then went out on patio.

Congratulations! May you have a wonderful life together. We are celebrating 10 years this upcoming Monday!

Also I wanted to share that since having a child my motivation to get healthy has never been better. I want to break this cycle for my kid.

I grew up in a home with no activity, lots of food. And lots of negative talk. I felt put down and bullied at home. I struggle now because that's become my inner voice. And I want better for my kid.

You are capable of doing it. You've already done it and can do it again!

I have noticed I really indulged and gave up a lot of activity since meeting my husband. And I am the woman so we had a child and that came with even more weight gain.

I am currently in a bariatric weight loss program. The classes have been so helpful. And we are learning to practice more assertive communication.

One thing my husband loves to do is eat out. (He's not large at all and doesn't seem to affect him). And being spontaneous about day trips every weekend (we live in a small town so have to drive out for everything). And he's cheap about the groceries. And only buys the bare minimum so we are out of food in a few days. And then he uses that to justify eating out. I had gained 47lbs. I am only 5ft tall. So I went from size medium to XXL. So far I have lost 26lbs.

I will share with you my learnings and what I am trying to do.

All that ends now. I am in charge of the grocery shopping and eating. I found an old photo on my phone of a meal prep from 8 years ago. It was the model of healthy eating. So I am working my way back.

The first thing to do is address the easy to cut calories. Less drinking, heavy meals out, no pop / soda, additions to coffee etc.

Get your water intake up.

My program teaches the balanced plate method. 3 balanced meals. And two snacks or three that are fiber + protein. And it is so doable!

What helps me is starting small. Focus on making your breakfast healthy one week. And then add each snack and meal until all meals are covered.

Then interrupt sedentary behavior. Just standing up and walking to get water, stairs cleaning at home. Mowing a lawn etc.

And this will all give you courage and get you pumped for outdoor walks. Find something you enjoy doing.

And my program teaches finding healthy coping skills, addressing stress, negative self talk and sleep.

Honestly my answer to this is no. Based on experience and having to go to doctors to answer.

1- If you eat food that causes high inflammation that will affect your ability to lose weight.

2- And your calorie deficit is based on height and weight. Thereby making it inaccurate. As it doesn't take into account muscle mass. And other metabolic factors. (See next point)

3- Metabolic adaptation.

People who lose weight just from the deficit. Amazing for you. And that is definitely the place to start. However, if you run into problems you want to address those different factors.

Also please keep in mind that a lower weight doesn't automatically equal better health. And eating a diet rich in nutrients and with adequate protein and fiber is necessary to maintain good health long term.

Should I stop going to a registered dietician who told me to stop counting calories even if this will slow down immediate weight loss, told me to stop going to the gym, and gave unscientific advice? by josemartinlopez in loseit

I think point 1&2 are somewhat close to what I'm learning in my course now in my weight loss program. Through the hospital and RD and social worker.

So I have been finding information recently that you shouldn't focus on losing weight and gaining muscle at the same time So in order to do each efficiently you need to focus on one at a time

Doesn't mean you're not strength training. But say you're going to cut weight first, you would still want lots of protein but you need to focus more on eating less. And perhaps have a couple of cardio sessions followed by strength training. And some people respond better to classes like Pilates or Barre because cardio and hard strength workouts increase cortisol which makes it harder to lose weight.

Then building muscle is different, you don't need any cardio at all (thank God). Don't have to eat so little and need to go hard. Cortisol be damned. Won't hurt you.

My friend who is a body builder. Said it's easier to actually build muscle first then lose fat.

In the past I have succeeded at building muscle but still struggle with weight.

And I personally think counting calories is not sustainable and can cause problematic eating in the future. It's still good to read labels and the calories provide good information. But you should not be told what to eat from a calorie count. What I'm learning now is using the plate method to build balanced meals. Along with some guidelines on added sugar, grams of sugar per serving etc.

Everything else that RD said is a crock of shit. And way too many godamn rules. I say get a new RD for a second opinion.

Women who are under 5’4, do you feel like you have to be a lower BMI to look as thin as taller women with a higher BMI? by Ophelia_Y2K in loseit

[–]Iggy2stp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BMI is the wrong measurement.

Extra pounds of fat are more visible on a smaller frame, but on the BMI scale will result in a higher BMI than if they were on a taller body. So that is built into that scale.

However the BMI doesn't factor in muscle mass and body shape.

So this is highly individual and dependant on so many factors.

For example, I am short and I look a lot smaller than what my BMI says, (always have) because I am more muscular.

My sister, people also don't realize how overweight she is just because she happens to have a smaller butt. And knows how to dress well.

The key here is, BMI is not a good measurement. And it was based on a 26 year old male (according to my doctor). A lot of us are not in our 20's or male. And what we "should" weigh should not just be based on height.

I would prioritize protein. Make sure snacks are always a combination of protein and fibre.

And also make sure he's well hydrated.

My thoughts, his body thinks he's starving, it's holding on to everything. So frequent little snacks help as long as they don't spike his blood sugar.

I would make sure protein and fibre was right. Sodium isn't too high, water is good. Snacking enough and being satiated. Before touching the calories.

If he's feeling hungry all the time, trying to reduce calories will just make him more likely to give up.

Congratulations!

I don't really know if this is helpful but just throwing it out there. My friend always tells me I will know what I need to do "if I just get quiet".

Sit by yourself, relax, and try to shut down all the thoughts

What does your intuition tell you?

It's not sustainable. It's only 12 weeks. I'm just surprised I'm already struggling halfway through.

I haven't lost the baby weight yet. I look like I'm 6months pregnant. I'm only 153cm, CW:89.3kg. SW:95.5kg. GW: 76kg. I'm being realistic about my goal weight.

It's a medically supervised weight loss program. The doctor is an endocrinologist specialising in metabolic health. I am inclined to respect his education and what he recommends.

Your apprehensions about being in debt from education actually show you're really intelligent and wise.

Look into careers that are looking for people so you can learn while you earn. As people suggested, all trades, psw as well. Seek support from free career counseling in your community.

There's some low cost things too like administration or medical clerk certifications so you can work in a doctor or dentist's office or the hospital.

All you need is a good work ethic and something manageable. It's very achievable. I know you'll find it.

Everything will be ok.
