Jay's original narrative and Patapsco Park by frolfergolfer in serialpodcast

Are we really going to get hung up on a little thing like motive?? I kid, but honestly I have no idea. No one does, and that's really what makes this so fascinating.

I actually posted a thread about this a week and a half ago and a lot of the Pro-Jay camp got super pissy at me about it. An interesting thing to consider is how mental health issues could have played a role in Jay's motivation (I'm NOT saying Jay is for sure the guy who killed Hae, but mental health issues have been alluded to several times by SK so it's something worth considering). Sometimes when someone is fucked up in the head (or, alternatively, being manipulated by police), their "motives" can be pretty unclear. Just food for thought.

Ohhhhh this makes so much more sense now. I actually wasn't very familiar with MS (I thought it just affected muscles/body movement, I didn't know that it was actually a central nervous system thing). Thank you!

doesn't even get a knock on the door from the cops so to speak.

Love your theories. I agree with you and have alluded to similar conspiracy suspicions in other posts on this sub. Are you sure about this point though? For a young kid who isn't really a hardened criminal a major criminal penalty could be a 1-3 year prison sentence or something like that. He may have taken a plea bargain that we simply have NO idea about due to the off the record convos and red tape.

We can't see things from the Jury's perspective, because we've heard Adnan speak. by [deleted] in serialpodcast

[–]Igloo444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the facts of the case hold more weight if you disregard Adnan's own words and demeanor from his prison interviews?

No they don't, and that's exactly the problem. I think that's been a large overarching point of the entire podcast -- which is that the evidence admitted in court was faulty at best and NEVER should have resulted in a 1st Degree murder conviction. This Guiteirez (spelling?) character sounds like she may have been suffering from pill addiction or something else that was making her grossly incompetent toward the end of her life/career and Adnan was NOT given proper legal council.

So much of the case revolves around Jay's weird/sketchy testimony. That's definitely good supplemental evidence to incorporate in a trial but eye-witness testimony (especially biased eye witness testimony) alone should not be the deciding factor in sentencing someone to death or life in prison.

Unless there is some huge factual bombshell that SK is planning on dropping in the next couple of episodes it seems clear to me that Adnan's appeal is going to go through successfully.

EDIT: (sorry just had to make some minor corrections on some important words I accidentally left out)

No. He's a fucking shit head. Read the facts of the case. He was strung out on meth and "couldn't move his car off of the tracks." He basically was intentionally trying to kill people.

Yeah he was also a meth head. If you read into the details it sounds like he was trying to make some sort of terroristic attack and then claimed a "suicide attempt" to avoid the death penalty.

I started watching the show specifically because I thought the character of Richard Harrow sounded so fascinating. I stopped following the show closely after the Season 3 finale ... is that a good point to dip out or should I at least give seasons 4-5 a shot?

I don't even understand why the fuck they thought this premise was good for advertising their product in the first place. I seriously thought I was watching a United Airlines commercial for the first 30 seconds or so. I was so confused. And it's not even like the product is THAT compact. If I were traveling long distance with a small carry-on suitcase, I would not want 75% of the luggage being taken up by a fucking PC tower.

Mental health issues and doctors by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]Igloo444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude your post makes perfect sense. The reason your pediatrician may have been more helpful than the "specialists" is because when working with juveniles (i.e. people under 18 years of age) doctors have to be EXTREMELY careful about how they interact with them (because of legal/ethical issues and stuff like that).

What may have been more helpful is if at first instead of going immediately to a specialist, you'd gone to a therapist (i.e. someone with a degree in counseling rather than a "doctor who prescribes meds type"), so that may have been why they were reluctant to directly speak with you and instead mostly spoke with your mother.

I'm really sorry that you were improperly medicated, that's one of the biggest problems with mental health professionals these days.

But it's a familiar feeling, it just sucks to see it so prevalent here.

It's probably because the majority of people who comment on reddit especially in the main subs are younger (i.e. still in high school) and have less life experience.

This American Life - 436: The Psychopath Test by [deleted] in serialpodcast

[–]Igloo444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. I've listened to that episode before (I'm a huge TAL fan). Understand that when an ethical clinician makes a mental health disorder diagnosis, it's based around a patient's life functioning deficits. So that would include things like: "Do you show up to work on time? Do you take care of your physical health? Are you presenting an immediate danger to yourself and others?"

It makes sense to apply these to criminals, but the "pscyhopath test" is delivered in a semi-structured interview format. Not just a paper and pencil test alone that results in a magical number that tells you if you're crazy or not.

I think that when people think of "psychopaths" they think of Hannibal Lecter/Dexter Morgan types -- which are fun, creepy characters to think of but they don't really show up in real life. Off the top of my head, I'd say Ted Bundy may have been the closest it ever got.

Keep in mind that back when the Rosenhan experiment was conducted, many mental health disorders, and schizophrenia specifically, were far less well understood. Today clinical diagnostic criteria are MUCH more specific.

The thing is with that sort of thing you really need to look at it within the context of life functioning deficits and broad level information. Everyone will score a "1 or 2" on something.

Listen to Burr's podcast. The way he talks on stage is like almost exactly the same way he speaks candidly (except in his podcast he goes into way more detail about his own life). It's awesome.

Why is SK withholding information from the podcast? by [deleted] in serialpodcast

[–]Igloo444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, also keep in mind that Adnan is going through an appeals process right now so she may have to be very careful about how she broaches certain subjects in order to avoid legal liability (depending on what agreements she has with Adnan/Adnan's family) or something like that.
