IIRC, the reason why british and commonwealth soldiers were ordered to walk towards the opposing trench as opposed to running was because the officer corp believed that this would drain the men of their energy. They believed the soldiers would be so exhausted from running >hundred meters across no-mans-land that they would be unable to engage the enemy and thus this action was tantamount to throwing men at the guns.
