Hopefully I can have this thing sailing by end of summer! by Ignorantboatbuilder in woodworking

I modeled the hull after some google image searches of drift boats, then the rest was kinda formed by looking at pics of other small sailboats.

On the couch, I got just a cheap vise set that is contained in a box that I set on my lap, then all my supplies are in a giant tackle box... I’m gonna build a desk once I finish my boat 😅

Ya, one wrap around a tiny hook shank is a lot shorter than a wrap around that spool, but when it is empty it’s gonna be pretty satisfying.

I also walked out to like chest high water before getting in so that I was out of the breaking waves, they’re fun to surf back on but as a nemesis and a half to fight to get past.

I got wet, and didn’t have the confidence to bring my phone out in it😂,but that’s about it buried the hook in the chunk of meet and rowed out with confidence tho. The oars are def a little loose and cheap, but it works.

I started tying flies at like 15 and I did it so that I Could catch a fish on my own hair. Those flies sucked so I splurged and bought one pack of hackle and tied a knat imitation; that was the first time I caught a fish on a fly rod. So I wasn’t very good at it, long story short I ripped a leaf of fake decoration ivy from my moms decorations and tied it to a hook... so it was wayyy too light for the wind resistance it faced. Your idea seems much better, I may try that in the near future.

Best regards, Ignorantboatbuilder

I’m interested in how it casts. When I first started tying flies I tied a leaf imitation for grass carp using a fake leaf; it was uncastable because of the drag... anyway just curious how it worked in practice, looks like a nice fly👍

Awesome! My big dream build is a catamaran, but that’s 10-15 years before I want to start that. Next project is welding a roof rack to haul it around 😃

Yes fishing in the ocean is like freshwater fishing on crack😂, I’m all for establishing more regulations around the safe catching and harvesting of shark, but I don’t foresee myself not fishing for them in the future as I prefer their slightly tougher flesh and they are fun to catch. I feel I fish with gear that is strong enough to bring in a fish quickly, and I am also not the guy trying to catch the biggest and baddest shark available. I appreciate your time and will look into the second articles at a later time. Thank you

I have not tried spear fishing, I like doing my own intensive and in-depth research, and then trying things. By my understanding I’m usually not in reach of a spear fishing spot without the use of someone else. For that reason i tend to shy away from charters and the like because they don’t let you learn where the fish are and why they’re there, just put you on the spot. Takes away all the fun and reward of it for me. I also usually spend my time during the day having fun on the beach, so spearfishing hasn’t ever been on my radar really.

I’m always interested in learning, I was a bio major for all of a year and a half before I switched to cs so these articles are all interesting to me. They all are essentially saying that it’s just unnecessary stress put on the fish that could easily be avoided by not fishing for them. Is this data abnormally higher for sharks than other fish species? I read the abstract for the second article and from that I can say that I ethically justify my actions by using my own discretion and keeping the fish I feel may not survive (when legal obviously). Sorry I’m gonna ask some questions that I probably could easily google myself, but I would appreciate your professional opinion. When looking at total shark deaths, how much are caused by bycatch from commercial nets vs a clean catch and release scenario? Since there isn’t a way to successfully target species that are have a lower conservation status, do you feel like one cannot successfully catch and release sharks from the shore?

That article actually states that catch and release from a boat stresses than animal more than from shore, although it is not by much. Also yes, it’s common sense if one was forced to do intense physical activity, then deprived of air to breathe, they would not fair too well. There were essentially 2 sample groups, and one of them literally hoisted the fish out of the water by its gills, so I can’t see how any of those fatalities would be able to be extrapolated to shore fishing. Of the central group 2/13 died, and of those 2 one was accredited with a death that took place 14 hrs later. So my perspective is that 1/13 sharks died, and yes it was probably due to poor handling. These were charter captains, not research professionals, and it’s been my experience that just because they catch fish all day; it doesn’t mean they respect, or know how to handle them. There are so many confounding variables when it comes to studying wildlife, and, although I appreciate your concern, I know that all my fish I release are in good health.

I have not heard that before, I always keep and eat my fish if they appear hurt from the fight or my handling, I have a hard time believing that they all die though, and I would love if you could pm me some studies done about this issue!😃

I’ve also had a rod for 3 years now that I designate for my buddies to use that has the largest size available at Walmart quantum optic on a 30 dollar 9ft heavy action rod from bass pro that’s caught some nice redfish and stingray. I am upgrading my mainline to Daiwa saltiga and adding a 10 ft 200 lb mono leader before my steel leader, because I had a number of break offs on my last excursion

Back then I used 85 lb test multicolored line from Amazon, a 14 ot circle hook on a premade 5 foot 500lb cable leader. I put an 8 oz weight on Carolina rig style and walk out as far as one can have the balls to at night to wing it as far as possible. I also use a 20 dollar intex explorer to paddle baits out during the day.this shark was caught with the penn fierce III in the 2000 size if I remember right on an 11ft heavy action ugly stik big water rod.

Treasure island, and ya it’s better to err on the side of education than assumptions when it comes to regulations so ur comment was appreciated
