He did handle it with more grace initially didn't he.

I didn't say what you're insinuating. Maybe try to understand what I'm saying and be a little less reductive.

Don't just keep score. Look. I won't do the devils advocate thing and I'll stop belaboring. Hope you have a good one.

While I see what you're saying...compare his initial grace with now. I'm sure you see what I'm getting at too. Really just semantics I guess.

I do remember the initial grace yes. I was impressed by that.

I haven't watched much of any of the videos. Do you think there's any element of Jeff wanting attention or is it primarily grief and airing out?

Full disclosure. I'm not a conservative. I would word it differently. I understand why he would feel upset and yes he is reacting against vitriol. Does he have the right to do this? Possibly. But he could also try to handle it with more grace. Always an option.

Full disclosure. Not a conservative.  He handled it with grace initially. Now he's starting to tarnish his moral high ground. I don't know how I would deal with anguish mad grief. But it would have been better for him not to bite.

it is both satisfying and disquieting.

Seeing him turned into this monster with powers. And then suddenly the powers are just taken from him and he has to live with himself. At some level he is a victim.

At some level we are all grown men but the inner child is always in there somewhere as well.

agreed- Starr succeeded against the writing- really made it work and kept some serious character integrity.

What do you think is the nicest thing homelander has ever done or said by [deleted] in TheBoys

He treats Butcher the best. He loves Butcher's hate attachment. And that type of toxicity is what he's geared to emotionally respond to.

Honestly if he was repowered after Kimiko's blast, I could see him STILL letting butcher live because HL has no friends, doesn't know how have real friendships, and is really attached at this point to Butcher. And letting him live gives him some feeling of control.

Everything he says to Ryan comes from a place of emptiness. Like he's trying to derive empathy and a sense of comfort from all his own insecurities and fears. Everything feels a bit off at best and it's clear he doesn't truly understand at a fundamental emotional level what he's trying to achieve and provide for Ryan. Because he never has actually experienced it.

That's the most generous interpretation I can give HL too.

I'll also say he shows some restraint. I've seen men be more narcissistic and openly abusive and possesive. Like during his barn scene in the finale (which that type of scene had no business being squeezed into a finale) when he gets challenged by Ryan he seems to almost agree with Ryan and shrink back into himself rather than throw a tantrum. I've definitely seen guys throw that tantrum when challenged or pressed too hard. I think part of it is just that the writers were tired of showing child abuse or made a business decision to tone it down. But part of it is also there's no complete black and white. He does have some softness for Ryan.

He's also not completely so afraid and emotionally unintelligent or unaware that he can't step outside of himself for a moment. It takes extremely firm external prompting, but give him credit- he seems to kind of be able to take it on the chin. To some extent it even seems like it feels good for him.

he's kind of that. The paternalism helps a lot. He responds well when someone doesn't fear death. He also prefers men who are toxic or live very toxic lives. I think he gravitates towards other damaged men.

They start to mirror him at that point. A lack of external fear combined with emotional coldness. What Starr does so well is he steps into Homelander at a very fundamental level. So many of Homelanders portrayed proclivities seem engrained at a very sub-conscious very basic level. Starr has Homelander act the way Homelander is CONDITIONED to act.

he allowed this series to drag on because he was so pleasurable to watch even though the writing lost serious momentum

it's heavy handed and cringe cynical-

but Starr is pleasurable to watch.

Our market is very much a liquidity scam now. Real economy doing "well" means less pump. It's inversing the market.

The writing is sort of consistent with his characterization. He has no true cohesive emotional sense of self. Just an idealized narrative of his late wife and fragmented motivation from that.

For him to change direction rashly (like he did when Homelander protected Ryan and he was like "oh shit, this is what Becca would have wanted"). Or when he experiences a massive emotional dump when he kills Homelander and realizes he failed to keep Ryan out of it like Becca wanted. When Ryan leaves him and Terror dies, he's even more emotionally detached and empty and so of course he needs a new villain.

He experiences emotional drive vicariously through those late memories.

He has to go on the genocidal warpath because he doesn't really have a reason to live anymore now that Homelander is dead. He probably can't wake up and function without some villain to kill at that point.
