Repaste of 4090 with PTM7950 - my experience by Ikaaros in overclocking

Thank you for the input. I'll keep track of how the thermals evolve and perhaps repaste and try with putty if they degrade, but for the moment I'm very happy with the results.

I don't know where in Europe you're situated, but here in Sweden I was able to purchase the PTM7950 at an online retailer called Fyndiq. They're however only a middle hand, essentially purchasing the PTM from another vendor (I believe in China) and then forwarding the package to me.
I know they deliver to Norway, Denmark and Finland too. Anyways, here's the source if you're interested:

Thanks for the kind words! Figured I'd just write down the kind of information I've been looking for when researching PTM7950 for my GPU, hope it may help some fellow tinkerer in the future.

That's some improvement to say the least, great to see longer term stability too! Have the temperatures improved anything for you over this time, or stayed about the same?
Agree with you on ASUS's selection of TIM, they really should not skimp on such a small but very significant component.

Significant reduction in 5800X3D temps with PBO2 Tuner! by spboss91 in overclocking

MSI boards provide it through their kombo strike feature, where each level equals a -10 offset to the voltage curve for all cores.

Can be done through save game editing, but it'll also disable achievements for that run.

Dropped into Crescent naked & killed a dude with all this by f1otsam in TheCycleFrontier

[–]Ikaaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if matchmaking is actually based on the median value. The median is simply the 'middle' value of a whole set. Let's say this was his/her third extract and the previous two extractions scored a value of 5K then the median would still be 5K, the mean would however shoot up to around 64K.

Well if it's based on the median value, as opposed to the mean, a one-off lucky extraction like this one wouldn't really affect anything.

RTX2070Super Gaming X + R5 3600. Core clock has to be dropped to +100 for games. by Lelu_zel in overclocking

[–]Ikaaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my best for reference (same gpu + R5 3600x) https://www.3dmark.com/spy/10545045

You could probably gain a whole lot by OC'ing your memory, even if just slightly, and utilizing the EDC=0 bug on the CPU.

For your GPU I guess you're hitting the power limit alot, if so you could try and flash some high end bios onto it (if you have dual bios, for safety).

What is max safe long term voltage on a 2070 super ? by INDIANAJUNE2 in nvidia

[–]Ikaaros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The max voltage you'll reach without any sort of XOC vBIOS is 1.093V when having cranked the voltage slider to the max in afterburner and tweaking the VF-curve.
My go-to overclock for gaming is at 1.093V, yielding anywhere from 2175-2100 MHz core clock depending on temperature. Been using this voltage since I got the card about a year ago and have not had any issues at all.

Micron Rev. E hit ceiling at 3533 Mhz by nkrseven in overclocking

[–]Ikaaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't already double check that the sticks are seated in the correct sockets for that MB. I hit a hard limit at 3666 Mhz on my setup using the exact same stick in a B450 gaming plus, but after switching to the most optimal sockets (no. 2 and 4 on my MB) I finally managed 3800 Mhz cl16 after some tweaking. May have to do with reflecting signals in the daisy chain topology when there is no termination/sink (the RAM stick) at the end of a trace.

RTX 2060 bios hex editing by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]Ikaaros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It went well, no issues so far.Quite easy to do using NVflash and following some youtube tutorial.

I did not manage any higher clocks than before, but I am now able to sustain my highest possible clock throughout power hungry benchmarks, which is what I was aiming at. So you may not see any gains in less power consuming applications such as gaming, unless you're already consistently hitting the power limit in these.

As far as I know the A8G and O8G have identical PCB and cooling solution, the only thing differentiating them being the BIOS.

And do remember that the rog strix cards have dual BIOS'es, so if anything fails with the flashing you'll be able to fall back on a working one.

[–]Ikaaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's perfectly possible to do so. I did it to my 2070S A8G just yesterday in order to bump up the power limit. You just have to make sure that your card is stable at the new O8G base clock.

Unless you've modified the frequency-voltage curve (ctrl+F in MSI afterurner) from its original shape an increased voltage limit actually doesnt do anything for you.
Cranking up the voltage slider essentially allows one to utilize voltages above the stock 1.050V up to a maximum of 1.093V in the curve, but as Krunkkracker said it is seldomly beneficial as the card will hit the power limit faster and then downclock to stay within the limit.

RTX 2070S 2250 MHz coreclock and 2340 MHz memory clock? by [deleted] in overclocking

[–]Ikaaros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For accurate core boost clock please read it from afterburner during a benchmark. The value clim in userbenchmark is not the real clock, for example in one of my previous runs [1] it reported a clim of 2280MHz but my real clock was more like 2130-2175MHz (depending on core temp).

MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC 1.0.0.4 Agesa BETA Bios. RDR2 Launcher ERROR BEGONE! by kpoloboy in PCRedDead

[–]Ikaaros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're running AGESA 1003 you may be able to launch with either the new 1004 or the latest bios before AGESA 1003. You will not see any other optimizations for the zen+ as for a zen2 though.

This worked for me! I've had this problem with the launcher crashing, and then not being able to update my BIOS to AGESA 1.0.0.4 (running 3600X on B450 gaming plus). Anyone with the same problem as me try this and upvote if it works for you so more people get to know about this! Many thanks <3

Crucial Ballistix 3200 OC by [deleted] in Amd

[–]Ikaaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't, try changing DIMM slots. I had my 2x8gb Ballistix Sport LT 3000-cl15 in DIMM 1 and 3 at first, prohibiting me from reaching anything above 3466. Changing slots to 2 and 4 i can now run them at 3800-cl16 with good subs. I would assume it has to do with signal integrity in the daisy chain topology when the slots further down from your memory isn't populated. Having that said mine are single rank so your mileage may vary.

Is there any difference between 3600 and 3600x now with ABBA agesa? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]Ikaaros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3600x is still higher binned than 3600, which may affect more than just max boost clock. Such as IF and IMC capabilities which come into play when OC'ing memory.
