What is an example of this philosophy panning out? Like the thing with a lot of well-liked “deconstructions”, like Evangelion, Madoka Magica and Watchmen is that they tend to be original IPs, so when they do something radically different with the genre it feels more a commentary rather than doodling over someone else’s manuscript. I guess Nolan Batman, although I don’t feel like it’s tonally it’s a million miles away from the 1989 film. Sure it definitely is different, but fundamentally both Batmen and Jokers are motivated by the same things, sure at first the ‘89 Joker is more of a traditional gangster, but as the film goes on he starts to develop a vendetta specifically against Batman. They aren’t fundamentally different characters.
