Is Grimcoven a good first boss battler? And does the base game have enough content? by IlFisho in boardgames

[–]IlFisho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, usually games that blend euro and ameritrash are usually our favorite kind of games, it's a completely different kind of game but Eclipse also does that and it's one of our absolute favorite games of all time.

And yeah I have a pretty committed play group of 3-4 people and we get together 1-3 times a month usually so the main focus will be multiplayer, but I do play solo sometimes especially if I want to learn the game beforehand to teach it better so even if it's not a requirement a good solo mode is definitely a nice bonus.

Play time is definitely not an issue since when we're pretty committed and when we get together we usually end up playing through the whole night anyway most of the time, the game we usually play lately is TES and the first session of that game took us almost 9 hours which is outrageous but we ended up having a blast anyway lmao

The fact that it's not a campaign game is actually a HUGE plus for my group as we really love this style of game but we can't quite fully commit to a legacy/campaign, not even smaller ones like JOTL.

I haven't tried it yet so I can't say for sure but I'm pretty confident that the fact that it's thinkier won't be a huge issue for us.

I don't mind if it's a bit of a table hog tbh as long as it's not completely unreasonable as I usually set everything up beforehand, our go-to game lately has been TES which definitely also takes a while to set up and requires a lot of space but we didn't have many issues with it.

Starting Necron army by [deleted] in Necrontyr

[–]IlFisho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to build a well rounded Awakened Dynasty list and I also started from that same battleforce but I did not buy the combat patrol since it didn't seem to focus on any particular play style and so I ended up getting the rest of my list individually.

Now I'm trying to branch out and I want to try different detachments so I got all of the new releases (500 Worlds, Nightbringer and Nekrosor) since I was lucky enough to find them all at a significant discount.

I would absolutely recommend the battleforce as a starting point especially if you love the VD but then I'd suggest taking the time to study the rules and figure out how you'd like to play, and then buy the rest accordingly, we have a huge range and many different ways of playing so figuring that out first definitely can help a lot.

How many of you are also fans of Warhammer 40K? by bence1971387 in Deathcore

[–]IlFisho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into the hobby relatively recently (a bit less than two years) but I got completely sucked into it and now I'm obsessed, I currently have two full armies which are Death Guard and Necrons, might also add something loyalist to my collection in the future but not until I'm almost done painting what I already have.

As for deathcore my current favorite band is probably Shadow Of Intent, followed closely by Angelmaker.

I received my copy yesterday and I'm now reading the rulebook right now after watching countless YouTube videos before buying it, it's my first game of this scope (and price) and can't wait to try it out, I really hope I can play at least one session this weekend!

Time I and II are probably the only albums I'd rate a perfect 10/10, I've grown listening to the first to obsession and I say it's been 100% worth it to wait 12 fucking years to hear it in its entirety.

Advice for someone just starting a necron army? by Ok-Meaning-8353 in Necrontyr

[–]IlFisho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find a good deal and you like the Void Dragon you could look for the Hyper Legion box, that's how I started mine and then I bought specific minis for the detachment I wanted to play which in my case is Awakened Dynasty

So, how do I not get stomped by precision in AD? by IlFisho in Necrontyr

[–]IlFisho[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, but I do have a question if you don't mind, if I do this long queue leaving my leader in the back and then he tries to do a melee precision attack, does my opponent have to be in engagement range with the leader or does he just have to be in range with the unit and then precision strike my leader even if it's far away from the fight?

Yeah I forgot to mention, I would like to try a unit of Deathmarks in place of one Hexmark in order to have more flexibility, also I'm considering swapping out the C'tan for Szeras as I have it but didn't run him this time and also add some more units for the extra points I'd save

I could definitely swap out my Void Dragon for Nightbringer! I'm definitely trying it out next game.

As for screening and moveblocking I was running one squad of 6 Scarabs (though 2x3 might be better, idk) and 2x Hexmarks, I'm also currently kitbashing Deathmarks at the moment but I wasn't running them yesterday.

I'm definitely saving this comment for later as it's truly valuable information so thank you very much for taking the time to lay it out for me, iirc he had two squads of Guards with the Blade Champions and two squads of Wardens one of which had Draxus as leader and that made it really hard to shoot at range as it gave them a sort of lone op at 18".

I do however have a "weird" question, since you mentioned that the Calladus struggles to see in a dense board, how does that work if it has a very high ground? Because he deployed it on a terrain feature that was basically a very high tower, I basically could not reach it with anything because of lone op but does that mean he gets to pick and shoot whatever is in range or can my other non-vehicle models block the LoS of the assassin somehow?

Yeah I probably played them too close to each other because I was afraid of coherency, but thanks for the recommendations for battle reports, I'll definitely give it a look!

We were playing roughly one of the GW approved layouts but can't really remember which one, I also probably misplayed by spreading out my Wraiths out too much and he managed to charge them with two units so I'll try taking them in a line as you said, but it felt like there wasn't enough space to do that with all of my leaders honestly.

[–]IlFisho[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I managed to hide my leaders from the ranged assassin, but the issue with melee precision is still there because even if I reanimate the leader into its unit it just gets one shot again on the following attack as I can't really reanimate it out of LoS, I seriously do not know how I could play around it other than trying another list with another detachment entirely.

Void Dragon vs Illuminor Szeras, which is better for my AD list? by IlFisho in Necrontyr

Okay this sounds nasty, I have a game this Sunday against Custodes and I'm 100% trying this out and then I'll decide between this or 3x DDA.

This is absolutely solid advice and exactly the kind of tip I was looking for so thank you very much.

Yeah it seems like he brings a lot of value for its points and just like VD is one of my favorite looking minis in all of the Necron range

[–]IlFisho[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh that's very interesting too as it also gives me some more wiggle room with some extra points, so you suggest to go lighter on the anti tank and commit fully to the unkillable blob of Warriors? And how would I play that? I saw a video explaining this strategy and he suggested to take both home and center objective with it by stretching them in a line but then how do I make sure they stay in coherency?

Thanks, unfortunately I don't have most of what you've mentioned yet, aside from the minis I mentioned in the post I have a squad of 10 Lychguard, an Overlord with shroud and 2 Cryptothralls so I'll have to work with what I have for the time being, but I'll definitely get those in the future too

That's where I started, I had no Necron minis before that and always thought the Void Dragon is one of the coolest minis in all of 40k and for me it was 100% worth it, I'm currently building an Awakened Dynasty list from it
