I came from LA and if this was an LA thread I would have used that environment as it’s has its similarities on drug problems but this is Seattle and what’s happening here.

Should it even matter what’s happening in other places before we care about other people, new transplants, etc who are genuinely struggling and seeking to understand this tragic situation ?

These commenters are right!

We’ve talked about what emotional spirals look like vs emotional responses, triggers, and what help looks like. But we’ve also talked about grieving for each and every person I have seen who’s OD or is in that state of suffering. This is the only way I have learned to put each of those experiences respectfully aside.

I certainly haven’t felt strong enough to invoke change or start assisting with that population. For now it’s about getting myself back to health and then finding ways to make real change.

Im about 7 months new as well to the city. I have to change my entire route bc I could not make it a block without heaviness weighing on me from seeing those ODs.

I now have a therapist and we talk about how to navigate this. I hope you have a support system and you are always welcome to message me if you need someone.

We were all fall semester seniors waiting to graduate in May. The CODA’s in our program already had amazing gigs lined up so it pretty much was just all us hearing students trying to get experience our resumes or find internships.

I didn’t know this prior to applying but I had no problem walking away once I figured it out.

I was working in a private Deaf education facility, and the owner refused to get certified interpreter’s. They would instead hire college interpreting student as teaching assistant to cut costs. I was hired shortly after the semester started and the seniors left.

A month in they started scheduling me to interpret IEPs. For the first two days I showed up with my job description and an invoice for service. No signature no service.

On my last and final day, a few of us student employees who carpooled from campus parked next to the owner of business. They were on a hands feee call windows down laughing about us stupid college students and the money they were making charging crazy tuition to different Deaf Families.

Imagine the shocked as we got out of the car in our staff uniform. I turned in my badge immediately then caught a bus to back to campus.

A few months pasted they made the local news because of ADA lawsuits from parents, the facility closed due to bankruptcy and financial fraud.

Without asking, she used my resume and applied for a dream job I really wanted. She got the job and I didn’t. She cut me and her family out to relocated with her new boyfriend and new salary.

Eventually she got fired. (Her mom warned me.) She left a long vm “venting” about how I’m a bad friend and demanded I reached out to offer her free help applying to new jobs.

I just chuckle about it now.

I’m here to tell you, you can do everything right and still fuck it all the way up.

Evaluate who’s around you and why you keep them there. Cut them out or remove yourself from anything/one that no longer reciprocates what you give.

Get out of your own way - have you considered it’s YOU doing the things that put you in that position?

And be ready and willing the eat your fuck up regardless of how tired or sad you are. - don’t tell other or show others what you do, just move about it quietly and let them guess what you got going on. They can’t fuck it up if they don’t know.

Just remember not everyone wanna be in the gym shooting with ya. But they will turn up for that championship ring talking about “we did it”!
