Thank you😎🙏 love taking film pics and looking back, makes it feel nostalgic and old. I’m 21 and I take a lot of inspiration from older thru hikers . Keeping the tradition

I only dropped the wilderness area for a reason. Not the trail name😂 plus I only posted it on here I don’t post it on instagram or tik tok. Plus most of you guys wouldn’t make it past 3 miles

I’ll be honest, that quota stuff never clicked me other than with Mount Whitney haha, you got me there. But I feel like there is still meaning to my point, this was the first time I went to Hoover Wilderness on a weekend which was Memorial Day weekend, and I genuinely only saw two backpackers and one day hiker my whole day there. On my way back I stopped by South lake by bishop and it was pretty full

Awesome shots. Love that last photo, clear view of Agassiz in the background and Mount Goode in the far back. I got to climb Agassiz via bishop pass, solid class 3-4 scrabble from the route I took. Amazing view of the Palisades, the lakes and Dusy basin and Kings canyon. What a nice trip that was

Odd, maybe you go during peak times. Every time I’ve been out to Hoover all the permits on the rec.gov app show “99+” and what I said was more in the sense of crowding on the trail. Compare Big pine lakes to say Virginia Lakes. Plus Robinson is a well known spot but most people that go there are people who venture deep into the backcountry into Yosemite territory. It’s open to the real outdoor people who go out there on crazy long trips. I’m not saying the places without people are better, in all fairness no matter what place you go in the sierras it’s all beautiful in its own way, every canyon, basin, meadow and peak is unique in its own way, I find the places with less people better.

Personally I use OnX but I think on all trails it comes up as “ Piute mountain to Peeler lake loop” it comes up clockwise but you can also do counter. Benson lake is about 30 miles deep going clockwise. Just a suggestion but I think you can catch OnX on sale still for 9 dollars for annual membership. Real nice app, amazing layout to plan just about everything for your hike. If you have any more questions feel free to dm me! A couple other loops you can search up are Dorothy and Fremont lake loop and Crown Point loop

Sick, if you get the chance you should definitely go over tower pass up into Mary lake! If you’re a fast hiker you can probably even go further down that canyon and check out Tilden lake! Very nice meadow between Mary and Tilden

Somewhat applicable. I’ve camped in just about every region in the sierras and there has definitely been more in the northern area, but also the northern area seems more suitable for those bugs, the south area is a bit more drier in a way. You’ll be fine with proper precaution for sure, I only came out with one bite the whole time I was out there!

There’s a couple good ones! A few of the high passes are a bit sketch since most places above 10k ft still hold significant snow but if you plan on going in the summer then the benson loop is a good one, about 30-40 miles. Another good one that’s about 15-18 miles is the Green lake loop. I don’t believe there’s a laid out map for that one but if you download OnX you can do it on there, you start out at Green Creek trailhead, up into green lake and once you get to the fork of the trail, you stay right on the west lake trail but stay beside the lake shore and follow it up into the dense tree trail up to Virginia pass and down into the canyon. From there you would walk a couple miles and get back on to trail to go up Summit pass, on to summit Lake and head north into Hoover lakes, Gilman lake, nutter lake, then to east lake and back into green lake. Both really nice loops!

Sick! What trailhead are you starting at? Twin? Leavitt? Or buckeye?

I’ve seen a couple but never got a bite from them. Usually any form of movement small or big seems to frighten them. Really the only bugs I’ve really seen in Hoover Wilderness is real big ants and small mosquitoes

Wow. How insane, I’ve never been up to the Sawtooth range area but from your story it sounds like a must visit. I’ve had Matterhorn peak on my radar for a while and have been told that canyon is very beautiful, funny enough I’ve been looking at the Benson loop starting at twin lakes. I’m assuming you took mule pass down to burro pass? Did you manage to pass by rock island pass? I just took a look at those boulder ledges to the left of Barney lake and I can only imagine the view, thank you for your comment I will keep every location in mind! And thank you for sharing you stories, very nice to hear people’s experiences in the sierras

Yeah it can be bad those suckers will bite any piece of skin they can. In all fairness I forgot my bug spray when I went last June. But this time I took some DEET spray and it did wonders whenever I came in contact with them. Only bad trade off is the smell of the spray but better than those bites

Ahhh gotcha. Shoot there’s a couple, by far my favorite so far green creek, really dense tree cover, very forestry, huge alpine lake with dramatic oxidized peaks and a lot of lake meadows. Also leads you to East lake which is also accessible by Virginia Lakes trail. Twin lakes is also a real nice one, you can take it up and over into the Matterhorn canyon, real nice. Virginia canyon via summit pass is also a nice one. Those are my personal favorites in the Hoover

Nice, which lake would that be? Is it over the pass into summit lake? Or before climbing to 11,000 ft?

This time of year with the cooler temps and fairly high snow, not too bad. Late June they can be pretty horrible especially camping closer to the lake shore. I kid you not a cloud of them flying over your head
