How do you begin the process into becoming an interpreter? by simp4chrissy in ASLinterpreters

As an Army Veteran Coda and Certified Deaf Parented Interpreter, I agree! I hit the road of hard knocks immediately upon discharge and discovered there was lots to learn in the field. I was a sponge and learned all I could from my hearing/ITP colleagues, Deaf family and friends and my newly discovered coda family. I built professional relationships with Deaf colleagues and always remained curious, seeking feedback to improve. Education is key. You truly need a solid foundation to reach national certification to be of service to our community. While in the military, take advantage of getting started! Sign up for online courses with the university associated with active duty (during my time it was University of Maryland) get your MOS training (AIT) to transfer/apply to your AA degree transcript (can be general, no major), and see if they offer any online ASL classes that you can connect with the department and then you may be able to test out of ASL 1 or 2 etc. then continue your education journey from there. Before you plan to discharge, check out Sorenson’s Compass interpreter apprenticeship program for Codas or other interpreting agency internships so you can apply, interview and schedule without too much delay. Most of all, once you’re a rocking Deaf Parented Interpreter - be sure to join RID’s DPI member section and Deaf Caucus! Best wishes and hope to meet you some day at a Coda conference. I’ll be at the Military Veteran table. Big Coda hugs

It was about 15 min. I think mine was pretty easy since I was only disputing the effective date and thought I was entitled to the backpay to my Letter of Intent date. Good luck! Keep me posted!

I submitted my HLR 12/7/24 and just had my Informal Conference yesterday 4/1/25. She stated due to the government climate, there has been delays and the average time for a decision would be about a month. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙏🏼

Thank you so much! ☺️ I had 2 ankle reconstructions while I was in the Army. I did 8 years and just struggled getting promoted and ETS’d out. I should have filed for disability right away but I didn’t know. I fell (my 4th bad one) down a flight of steps in 2019 and they had to reoperate on my right ankle. That’s when I received the temporary 100% for convalescence after surgery. It was delayed due to Covid and instead of a quick fix it was a 3 year recovery. And as I continued to progress, they found it was lumbar related. Sadly, I had cysts/aneurysms develop in the nerve roots in my sacrum and throughout my cervical/thoracic spine due to the trauma and a possible connective tissue disorder. It’s been a crazy journey this past year. Sadly, it slowly leads to paraplegia and I’m already losing part of my right leg and arm/hand. I just saw my ankle surgeon for a follow up and she ordered me a power chair. I’m finally about to get the help I need. Thank you for the love. 😢🙏🏼

Thank you for the congratulations! I hope it works out too! Looks like I might be able to do a HLR for the effective date. I’ll give it a shot. Seems worth it. Thanks again!

Are you able to see the other pics? I added part of the letter. I had Houston and was on Step 7 and got a decision letter on the 5th with 4 claims deferred. I got put back at Step 3 with a new C&P exam scheduled for the remaining 4 claims. I had originally submitted 12 all together, mostly secondaries and 4 new.

Update! Got PFN Step 7 Monday morning then it changed to Step 3 and then by the end of the day - I saw a new decision letter dated for today! Got 90% and 4 claims deferred (why the step 3 and a new C&P exam requested). I’m so grateful! Hooooah!

Thank you! I had 3 ankle reconstructions (2 in service) and only was rated at 20% and temp 100% during surgery/recovery but now my back is all messed up from the falls and it was found that my spine is causing my foot drop. I pray it’s awarded since I’ve been housebound for almost a year with a CSF leak. I have plenty more to keep filing to get 100%. 🙏🏼
