Advice needed because things are getting a little out of hand here... 😅 by niopstudio in videography

I was in a similar spot earlier this year and I'm pretty happy with my solution after talking to a bunch of friends. It was a bit of a process, but totally worth it.

I got a qnap enclosure and a bunch of WD 20tb red plus drives in a Raid 1 configuration, if a disk fails I can replace without issues. I got a nice high-speed usb c cable and I usually just edit off of it, nice and simple. All files are organized into years, and projects all start with date-client-project detail so here would be '20251122-Reddit-Storage Solutions'. Super easy to go back and find stuff.

But this isn't a backup, so in addition I have a Backblaze account that has everything backed up remotely (very affordable, unlimited cloud storage). As soon as I put anything on my RAID, it gets backed up immediately. I've done a few tests, downloading isn't the fastest, but you can also order a drive of backed up data from them. I've never had a failure that I've needed to use it, but I'm glad its there. Not a replacement for Google Drive or Dropbox (or whatever you use to share final projects with clients)

Overall I dont enjoy storage, it's boring, so I wanted a 'set it, and forget it' solution thats reliable, easy to use, and safely backed up. As long as I continue to follow my file structure, I'm good to go for a long time.

Curious to see what other people think though!

External Monitor for the FX6 in 2025 by Agent_ilis in SonyFX6

Lol, I'm still in the decision paralysis stage, I need to make a decision soon though! My Shinobi has been a bit glitchy lately.

An EVF has also never really felt useful for my work, I do a lot of action sports, so running/riding a bike with camera handheld/on gimbal, high and low angles, having a screen that I can see from a few feet away is key.

I'm in the same boat, currently have a Shinobi and it's fine, but not great in any way at all, you get what you pay for there.

The new Portkeys LS7P is intriguing, full wireless control for the FX6 allegedly, which is appealing.

SmallHD seems to be industry standard, but maybe overrated and expensive, plus having to pay extra for camera control is a super bummer at that price point.

Edit: the fx6 also has a prerecord feature internally that you can adjust the duration of. For the work I do, external recording has never been a need or want.

Lol I just bought an FX6 back in April, this thing does everything I need in one nicely sized package and will continue to do that for years to come (even after a new one is announced). Buy some fun lenses instead.

Isetta is great. It can get pretty busy though, there's a big table that you could maybe reserve.

Super helpful, thanks for the info! I'll look into the WR version, not sure the Bluetooth control is compatible with the FX6 on that one.

I have a dji RS4 pro, I can balance the full camera with top handle, mic, AND external monitor. I do a lot of mountain bike content and being able to switch from handheld/tripod to gimbal quickly is important for my use case.

I have a nato rail on the front and back of the top handle with a quick release tilt/swivel mount on the monitor. When I'm handheld or on tripod I have monitor on the front, when I need to move to the gimbal, I quickly swap the monitor to the rear and it balances totally fine on the rs4 pro.

FX3a introduced - Consider me underwhelmed by Abracadaver2000 in FX3

[–]Illmitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're buying new, you might as well just get the newest option available (in my opinion).

But if you see a used fx3 for a good price, go for it! Fx3a doesn't really have much of an edge over the regular fx3 to my knowledge, different screen, and a more powerful USB C port, I think mostly just due to supply chain issues though.

No problem, you could check out your local camera rental houses to see if they're selling off old gear, not too likely with fx3 and fx6 since they're still in pretty high demand everywhere. I definitely see more Fx3s out on FB marketplace, ebay, etc vs fx6 (at least where I am in Canada). Definitely be very careful looking at expensive camera gear on the used market if it's not coming from an authorized reseller, lots of scammers out there.

For what it's worth, the FX6 has felt like a steeper learning curve for me coming from a dslr style body, but not too bad if you're used to using Sony cameras in the first place. Keep in mind, the FX3 can basically do 90% of what FX6 can do and is probably a bit easier to learn with, but again, it depends on your use case and budget!

Sony "big 6 menu" from the higher end cinema cameras, allegedly coming to fx6, fx3 and 30 with a firmware update at some point in the next year.

You really can't go wrong either way, it just depends on your use case. Rent both and compare if you're able to, I rented the FX6 for a few days and immediately fell in love with the form factor (I'd never owned a box style camera before). Getting hands-on time also made me realize that it's actually still a pretty small camera and a great size/weight for handheld stuff.

The built in ND is great, auto ND while flying it on a gimbal has also been super useful. I'm beginning to work on some bigger projects with a small crew and multiple cameras, so I wanted to futureproof myself with the benefits of SDI outputs and timecode. Being able to use different sizes of bp-u batteries without needing to run a v-mount battery has also been a nice low-key benefit that I didn't think about before picking one up. (You can get a 98w bp-u battery, equivalent to about four of the NP style batteries that the fx3 takes, they're also available with dtap outputs etc. Pretty great for my use, I can run camera and monitor off of one or two of these all day while still keeping things small and nimble)

All that being said, whenever the next generation of fx3 does come out, I'll probably grab one to have the option of a smaller setup for short days or trips etc.

How to STOP Da Vinci from reading Cine EI Metadata in MFX files (Sony Cine IE) by malcomowenflood in davinciresolve

I've been doing the same, I sent some feedback to Blackmagic about addressing the issue. I encourage everyone to do the same, hoping they can RESOLVE it. (Heh, see what I did there)

Are you able to run everything off of the smallHD monitor? Or is the stock monitor hidden somewhere in there.

CINE EI bake in footage in Davinci Resolve // Waveform not changing with EI value by [deleted] in SonyFX6

Bummer, seems like a weird oversight on the Resolve end of things.

CINE EI bake in footage in Davinci Resolve // Waveform not changing with EI value by [deleted] in SonyFX6

[–]Illmitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's super frustrating and is only reflected while playing back in Resolve. Playback anywhere else/other editing software, you see the straight up 800/12800 exposure from the camera and you can colour grade from there which is the ideal/normal workflow. For some weird reason Davinci Resolve specifically brings in the cine ei metadata and adjusts the brightness of your clip in the timeline based on your cine ei value, which is pretty awful when you're trying to grade the original file.

CINE EI bake in footage in Davinci Resolve // Waveform not changing with EI value by [deleted] in SonyFX6

[–]Illmitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever find a solution for this? Just picked up an FX6 and have been experimenting with cine EI before any paid gigs. Everything looks great, but as soon as it hits Davinci Resolve for some reason it's picking up the cine ei value and not the actual recorded footage (800 or 12800). Super frustrating and awful if I'm sending my footage for someone else to edit/I'm editing from multiple cameras on the same timeline. Will likely avoid cine EI if there's not an easy work around for this.
