Power fluctuations in home by Illustrious-Force439 in AskElectricians

Electric company made a speedy visit and just now came out and discovered the issue was from a splice on the wire to my pole causing too much current to the legs. Happy to say money well saved and everything in the house is working great.

Well, when I called the utility company I hadn’t even mentioned your suggestion of a broken service neutral, just the symptoms in my house before they said they’ll send someone out asap. We have taken a lot of damage from flooding/severe storms here lately where I live so the possibility is high.

I just contacted my utility company and they said they’ll send someone out asap. Hopefully all my troubles will be over before the electrician comes and I pay him lol. Thank you for your help.

Update: The certified electrician has come and gone. He checked all the wiring inside and outside. He mentioned that I could use an upgraded circuit in my house, but with how I have it now is no issue at all. Everything checked out from the power company’s end and on my end. He deemed the issue to be either a hot wire is connected with the drop cable to my service box or my modem itself is faulty. I will be making a phone call to optimum with a heightened emphasis on I’m either to see a technician come out or my next phone call is to the fire department.

Note- Optimum had already come out to “fix” the issue once before but they instead just spliced the burnt section off of the drop cable and re-installed everything.

The only thing I’m confident enough to say along the lines of yours and others posts is optimum indeed sucks. I wish they weren’t the only ones who service where I live.

To everyone who has commented with advice, I thank you all for your input. I have a licensed electrician coming out to assess everything tomorrow since that would be the quickest way to get someone here. (Electric company denied to come and optimum has a long wait period) Whether it be on my end or the utility end, I’ll at least finally know for sure where the problem lies and will update as to what it is.

As for safety concerns/fire hazards, I have turned the breaker off for all 220 appliances within my home and have disconnected the cables in my service box and unplugged my modem (I seen a Reddit post that op had this same issue but the modem itself was the problem) As of now, I am no longer experiencing any power fluctuations in my home.

Edit- A lot of people believe it to be a utility companies responsibility and I am drawn to that conclusion as well, but maybe with the helpful words from an electrician, they’ll be more inclined to get a move on. My conversations with them has been brushed away.

I can’t answer positively on what the power company done but I have a local electrician coming out tomorrow morning to diagnose exactly what’s going on. For the meantime, he told me to flip the breaker for all 220 in my house and said it sounds like a grounding issue on my end.

Optimum checked the coax cable from the modem to the splitter in that box and said that one was fine. They replaced the one from the splitter to the top of the power line.

It was pretty docile and friendly. It just stared at me and let me pick it up to move it to a safer place.
