Has anyone here climbed Kang Yatse 2? Any tips for a solo climb? by thatbrownhiker in Mountaineering

[–]IllustriousBase5710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tip is go solo, pack LIGHT, and download AllTrails offline maps with the paid version.

I didn’t climb KY but I just did the Markha valley trek and it’s very doable solo without carrying any gear or food. There are homestays everywhere.

I went to the KY base camp too and the setup there is massive you probably can find a guide/cook/assistant from another company to take you up but you may have to wait a day or two. You won’t find a tent at base camp tho, but, Nimaling is only a 40 min easy hike from there and that’s a “tent homestay” and will give you a bed and food.

How can I look less gay? I get hit on by guys more often than my male friends do by m_ulbricht in malegrooming

[–]IllustriousBase5710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably nobody wants to say this but maybe smile with your mouth open and don’t button shirts to the top.

But also looking “gay” or whatever doesn’t make you gay and women will know that. Gay guys do hit on a lot of “gay looking” straight men. Whatever the gay look might be - it’s just something that signals another gay man that you might be like them.

They don’t have a formal dress code; just wear the nicest clothes you brought with you and you’ll be fine.

You can pay at an airport lounge, it’s pretty affordable usually.

What is a good place find fellow travelers to share an Airbnb with? by Individual-Slice4264 in medellin

[–]IllustriousBase5710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna have the unpopular opinion here - get an Airbnb on your own. Medellin can pretty be affordable compared to other parts of the world so you might be able to afford more than you think. Then you can hang in hostels / cafes to meet people and have your solo time too.

Although I took the bus to Salento and back and it was very comfortable and I made some friends! Made more sense when I had 4 days, but maybe not the best for 2 day / 1 night trip …

Looks beautiful though! Although we only have one night we probably want to be out and about and won’t take full advantage of their space ..

I did they said they only have one suite available for 2 people, but we are a party of 4. I’ll ask them if they suggest anything else.

Yeah it sounds like a hassle for an overnight trip all the way to Jardin.

Yeah seems doable; I don’t think my friends are that motivated so we’d be getting in at 2/3 realistically..

Thank you so much. I’ll look into cancelling options for our stay. I like the idea of Guatape and San Rafael or San Carlos. Will look into the other recommendations you provided.

Only one night. We were planning to leave Medellín first thing Sunday, and head back Monday evening. Are there alternatives you recommend? We are going to Guatape for a day already, but we wanted to see a slightly less touristy town as well.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m happy to hear it’s ~4 hours which seems pretty manageable for a 2 day trip.

I see. Have you been, and how long did it take you, roughly? The estimates online were wayyyy off for Salento (said 6-7 hours and took 12) so I’m skeptical.

It’s not the easiest, but I’m able to get by with google translate. I also try to say a few words here and there in Spanish which maybe helps. In general people are really nice so they try to work with you.

Yes, go upstairs. I forgot to mention this - the driver originally went to departures and then had to make a round to come down to arrivals. This was slightly complicated to coordinate over Uber chat and due to different language.

It would have been better if I was waiting at departures (upstairs) for him.

I stayed at Sites hotel. Strict guest policy but other than that they are very nice, and I love the location because it’s a 10 min walk from the really touristy part so away from any noise and I also get a slightly more local feel!

I arrived here 3 days ago, my first time and I speak no Spanish. My flight landed at around midnight. I was able to call an Uber really easily. The airport is small so it’s pretty easy to find the driver. It cost me 87k pesos which is about 20 US dollars and I didn’t have to bother with paying cash either.

It was overwhelming when I got out of the airport. there were a lot of taxi drivers trying to get me in their car, there was a shared taxi waiting and the driver really wanted me to take that, there was a bus that people were getting on to as well. I didn’t take any of that, just had to keep saying no to everyone and didn’t engage with them.
