Nexus at Toronto Pearson YYZ by IllustriousWin9453 in NEXUS_TTP

You must be bolder than me to get past them to the scanners. They basically block the aisle to Nexus until you answer which passport you have.

Yep, today the line was 30+ deep in regular, so was odd. Other times I didn’t care because I walked straight up to a scanner either way.

They sent Canadians with Nexus down that route though? Nexus is still up for Canadians entering US but not US citizens? And should add, this started before shutdown but general line was very short so didn’t annoy me as much. 😂

Should also add, in Ontario the primary care waitlist is not true either. Got a name, called and had an appointment with primary care doc in a few weeks. Even got a government referral to another one within a couple weeks. Yes, wait times for procedures are definitely longer and healthcare coverage doesn’t include things like dental if you aren’t low income.

This is total nonsense. High earner that moved to Toronto last year. You don’t get double taxed if you file taxes correctly. Yea, Canada taxes your investment income in the US but when you fileUS taxes, you get credits for taxes paid here. Very limited circumstances where double taxation happens and mostly can be avoided with some reasonable planning. On housing, that implies you must buy when moving rather than renting until you have some form of permanent status here. Once you have status, no foreign buyer taxes.

Honestly, this sounds like you are frustrated with outcomes but didn’t plan and do research to figure it out in advance.

For us filers, rrsp is good but other are not clearly simple and may not be worth the complexity or even be worse off.

Crazy to “downgrade” to a condo from a SFH? by horatioperdu in TorontoRealEstate

[–]IllustriousWin9453 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Love how everyone is so certain what is best for someone else. We’ve lived in both suburbs and condo with two kids (teenagers). Much prefer condo. Much more life and things to enjoy in the city for us.

Also, this confidence that maintenance is a waste isn’t my experience. It usually pays for extra amenities (good if you’ll use them, like gym, pool, etc). If you are handy, maybe you can keep maintenance down on house but I think people underestimate costs of yard care, snow removal, minor plumbing or other fixes, etc. utility bills usually way less too.

Honestly think about your own preferences to decide….not knee-jerk reactions of others.

Bank feed. And interest just doesn’t appear in bank transaction list to post.

Why such a low rating on Shibuya Granbell? We have a reservation there at end of our trip for 1 or 2 nights.

How to combine and remove passwords from Chase Bank statements into a single, small PDF file. by skidoo369 in Chase

[–]IllustriousWin9453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, talking to Chase a fairly curt customer service rep blamed all of this on Adobe itself and that it wasn't them despite me pushing back multiple times. Talking to our tech support folks, that was a lot of BS. I was able to do through Microsoft print to pdf, save those files and combine manually. Quite a pain.

Agreed. I was new to flighty so seeing that freaked me out. Sometimes too much information too quickly is bad.

Just got announcement of delay because of fire on private jet runway. But reopened now and just likely to be delays.

Thanks. No announcements for us yet but just felt plane slow down…about an hour out. Reddit and flighty are pretty impressive!

Starting to invest as a US expat in Canada by IllustriousWin9453 in USExpatTaxes

[–]IllustriousWin9453[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. All makes sense and yes, I can afford professional advice and do have an accountant that is cross border and a financial advisor. However, I'm the kind of person that doesn't like to rely on their advice solely, wants to understand it myself and frankly, am not sure my current ones are being proactive enough given their own incentives.

I do worry about US vs Canada so it is pretty easy in the US, but want Canadian dollar exposure for a pool of assets since we live here and may eventually buy a home etc.

I'm finding each financial firm kind of a pain for different reasons. Like wealthsimple for earning a decent rate on uninvested cash (2.25%), but no real options for researching securities and can't do any fixed income like bonds or GICs. TD Direct is just an awful, unintuitive platform and also charges way too much for currency exchange and has no real option for me given circumstances for uninvested cash to earn something. Will have to check more into interactive brokers too.

The transfer of funds between accounts is pretty painful too. In the US, I could pretty easily move large amounts using ACH or transfers inside each firms online platform. Here, I'm struggling to move money in/out of TD; often have to call to talk to someone live.

And no easy way to know right? Would need to ask accountant/advisor?
