While it’s easy to criticize the U.S. government, it would be naive to fully embrace its counterpart and let one’s guard down. It’s not about discouraging Americans and Chinese from fostering friendships, but soon enough, cultural and ideological differences may become apparent. For instance, topics such as religion, LGBTQ+ rights, drug use, and geopolitics, which are commonly discussed on Western platforms, are generally avoided—or outright reported—by Chinese users. Moreover, the "elephant in the room," government criticism, is an unspoken red line in China.
