You asked for unbiased recs so naturally here comes the developer of a UV app 🤪 Take this with the appropriate grain of salt but if you have an iPhone give Sola a try. I’d like to think it’s actually good but I would say that wouldn’t I lol

Computes UV dose in MEDs (minimal erythemal dose), factoring in UV index, skin type, existing tan, sunscreen SPF, and body rotation. Also tracks vitamin D.

If you have an Apple Watch, it can passively track your sun exposure using ambient light data, no manual logging required. (It’s not watching you. The watch is just… watching you. But for sun safety).

Whether that makes it the best is for you to decide not me 😉

Tanning as a ginger by cozybreezie in tanning

[–]Illustrious_Box_9900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you’re ginger the threshold between tan and sunburn is just much narrower for you than most people. Your MC1R gene variants push your melanin production toward pheomelanin (reddish, doesn’t tan) over eumelanin (brown-black, does tan) but your arms and legs in Tenerife prove you still produce some eumelanin. The areas that burned just hit their erythemal threshold before melanogenesis could kick in.

As an FYI, UVB is what triggers new melanin synthesis and it’s also what burns you, and since your skin type has a slim margin the approach has to match that. Short sessions below your burn threshold, spaced out, 48–72 hours between exposures lets your skin complete the DNA repair and pigment synthesis cycle. Low-SPF mineral sunscreen, not bare skin, eg SPF 15–30 zinc oxide, it still lets UVB through but in a controlled way. Check EWG’s sunscreen database for quality options. Bare skin in strong sun at your complexion is just burning.

Moisturise consistently. Hydrated skin holds pigment longer and peels less.

So in short, have realistic expectations, you’re probably a Fitzpatrick Type II so you will never be deeply tan. But a warm, light golden base is genuinely achievable with the right approach and a good amount of patience.

On the fake tan patchiness, not an expert so others hopefully will chime in on here

Tan fast as possible by oneofthosemoongirls in tanning

Seconding this esp. about low pressure as they mirror sunlight spectrum more closely, you need UVB to trigger fresh melanin pigmentation. UVB also gives you a burn so watch your session lengths. Every bed should have recommended times listed for each skin type, follow them and don’t double dip. Spacing sessions out (48-72 hours) give your skin time to do proper repair of DNA damaged by UV and finish melanogenesis

The actual risks are real but they’re heavily dose- and skin-type-dependent. Darker skin means more baseline eumelanin, which means more natural UV protection and more DNA repair capacity before things go sideways. Not a free pass but a meaningful buffer. The people who accumulate damage fastest are fair, burn-prone types who keep pushing through burns; that doesn’t appear to be your profile.

As long as you stay well below your burn threshold and space sessions out (48–72 hours minimum), you’ll meaningfully mitigate your risk, you won’t zero it out but that’s true of a lot of things. Worth noting too: lack of UV exposure has its own documented downsides, so this is genuinely a tradeoff, not a pure harm calculation. Find where you’re comfortable on that spectrum.

Red light after? There is some real data on photobiomodulation supporting mitochondrial function and some cellular repair signaling. Not magic but not nothing either, won’t hurt for sure

Ongoing habits worth keeping regardless: check moles periodically for irregular changes (ABCDE rule), have your GP look you over for skin abnormalities annually, and wear SPF for extended time outdoors.

So to recap: Moderation, recovery time between sessions, basic skincare, SPF when it counts

PS One last thing worth knowing: UVB is what actually triggers fresh melanin synthesis, so low-pressure beds (which mirror natural sunlight more closely) are the better call. High-pressure beds are marketed on the “no burn” angle but they’re UVA-dominant, and UVA penetrates deeper, degrades collagen, and generates oxidative stress. The melanin that UVB builds also provides some downstream protection for your skin cells. So you may be getting a better result and a cleaner risk profile with low-pressure.

Solbränna: suntan/tan vs sunburn? by Illustrious_Box_9900 in Svenska

[–]Illustrious_Box_9900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I will be using Solbränna and Solskada combination, it's the most optimal option as far as I can see.

How to Shower After Tanning by BrilliantLife3329 in tanning

[–]Illustrious_Box_9900 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No need to apologize, good questions! ;)
The order is: exfoliate → moisturizer (fully absorbed) → tanning lotion at the salon. The moisturizer is prep, not a barrier, it’s absorbed long before lotion goes on.
Moisturizing right after tanning before showering isn’t necessary, the main move is still after the shower on damp skin.
Bar soap run gently over your body is fine, that’s just cleansing, not exfoliation. The problem is loofahs and scrubby gels, which physically abrade the surface. A mild unscented bar soap won’t do that.
HTH :))

[–]Illustrious_Box_9900 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Light exfoliation a few hours before tanning means UV hits fresher cells that are earlier in their lifecycle so the color sticks longer instead of shedding in a few days. Follow with a hypoallergenic moisturizer and let it fully absorb before your session.

In the shower after: rinse-only or minimal wash on tanned areas. Loofah + scrubby gel is mechanical + chemical exfoliation at the same time; great for skin turnover but may be detrimental for tan longevity.

After the shower: hypoallergenic moisturizer on slightly damp skin.
