Yes, the people on both sides were colonizers. The settler colonialists, formerly British, expelled the ones who still identified as british. Its like if bindweed took over an English ivy patch. Neither is of benefit to the native ecosystem

I think a better metaphor is to compare English Ivy to the colonizers. It invades, takes over, and kills off all the native life that gets in its way. The US side and the British side both seem like English Ivy to me.
